I am in the market for some new open backed cans and don't want to spend time pestering guys in a shop just to walk out and order online. In particular I'd like to be able to compare AKG 701 with Senn 600, and maybe try some other brands like the beyerdynamics.

I am in the market for some new open backed cans and don't want to spend time pestering guys in a shop just to walk out and order online. In particular I'd like to be able to compare AKG 701 with Senn 600, and maybe try some other brands like the beyerdynamics. I once tried just about every hi fi shop in Tottenham Court Road and found it a depressing experience. Young men in cardboard suits wearing lung scorching aftershave with a wide knowledge of sales brochures. Shops which provide such facilities as auditioning and after sales don't usually compete on price but on service. I occasionally choose to pay the full purchase price for some equipment in a local Audio shop. In return they give me advice on any matter I care to raise, I've borrowed amplifiers on a couple of occasions and I can always drop by for an excellent shot of espresso. This shop is also very active in a lively local music scene and adds to the gaiety of the neighbourhood. I'm happy to to have this sort of service rather than a substantial discount. I also buy a lot of stuff from cheap box shifters but I like to think I do something to keep real shops with real service alive. Hope this doesn't sound pious as I'm an evil bastard at heart. ;D

My local Hifi shops now mostly do big tellys and some audio on the side. I went into one and asked about HD600 and 701s and the manager didn't have a clue and had to look the price up. The shop where I bought my first pair of Senns used to also do Revox and Nakamichi as well as the affordable stuff, and stocked Beyer, AKG and Senns, last time I went in there it was full of second hand tat, Sharp/JVC flashing light crap and one old Luxman amp that didn't sell.

sometrolls, have you had a look on h34df1 - there might be a UK meet you can get to and listen to a few different cans and amps too.

Sometrolls, Grahams Hifi used to be a highly regards specialise dealer on Tottenham Court Road. I know they carried Sennheiser Headphones, we had the same rep! (I just used to get him p*****d more often ) A web search shoes they're still around and might be a good bet for an audition. There was a specialist dealer, I think it was on Windmill Street, just off Tottenham Court Road about half way up (The turning before Goodge Street it your're going North). They've got a website - google search 'Cornflake Shop'. Never did find out where the name came from

I had 580s for a decade so kinda know what the 600s will be like, I'd like a HD600 vs burned in K701/702. Also curious about the Beyers which look so comfy, but even their own literature suggests that the models are coloured in different ways.
