I rather flakey Meridian 206 (pre-delta sigma) has com into my possession. Seemingly they are well thought of - and a slightly dodgy one sold on fleabay rcently for 150 quid. So I expect a good one to go for at least a couple of hundred. This one does not seem to be reading the disc - so a potential lazer issue to dig into! I have three options ... - Sell it as is on ebay
- repair it and sell it
- repair, mod and keep
Anyone throw any light on these options. Is tehre much to be can done with these CD players?

I'll have a dig inside and see if I can determine whetehr it the first - TDA1541 and CDM4/12 or later version "The first ever 206 started off with a CDM4/21 Philips transport mechanism and a 16-bit chipset. This was followed by a bitstream revision to become the 206B. Later Meridian updated the 206B with a Philips DAC7 chipset and also a newer version of the transport mechanism (CDM4/19). The designation 206B was retained probably because the DAC7 is also of bitstream technology. The final version, the 206 Delta Sigma, uses also the newer CDM4/19 but now features the Crystal CS4328 chipset, as well as improved logic control and ergonomics. All four versions however share the same trait of having a fast-acting drawer that slams shut with a rather worrying "thunk".

Sol,
I have a 206B that is not in full working condition at the moment. Before it starting cutting out intermittently I was using it as my main source and was very happy with it. The disc will play for a while then the power seems to cut out.
I would recommend repairing yours if that is possible and keeping it. You could contact Meridian who will still repair 206's providing they have parts. I think the laser assemblies are no longer available. I'd like to get mine working again but I'm not sure if it worth the expense of sending to Meridian if it can't be repaired economically, by which I mean less than £100.

Actually, most cdps, except the CDRom drives as used in current Meridian cdps, use Philips mechanism. To get Philips mechansim laser assembly is still relatively easy as now there are China made ones as well. As for Sony mechansim laser, it's still quite easy to get as there are China compatible ones as well when Sony doesn't have any more. Quality wise, I'm not too sure as current China made ones I don't have too high a regard for their quality. Of course, I'm not talking of highend products like Shanling or Consonance.

Anyone throw any light on these options. Is tehre much to be can done with these CD players? Find an old player and switch out the laser. I think the old players used the same lasers. models were 470, 472, 582, 630...ect.
