TEAC MC- DX 30 This has got to be one of the bargains of the century? £100 and comes complete with NXT flat panel speakers which are at the moment sounding very electrostatic like indeed. I only took delivery of this puppy this afternoon so am still pretty much in the process of setting it up to find the sweet spot. At the moment it's doing duty at my workstation and, believe me, this thing images with pinpoint precision! I've been ripping some old CD's out and have been transfixed for a few hours now..... I'll do an in - depth on this after a good bed in period / placement experimentation but, already, I know this is something VERY special for under a ton.

I never thought in a million years that I would enthuse over an "all in one" all singing all dancing £99 "micro" player but this thing has REALLY taken me by total surprise.
I've traditionally been a dedicated loudspeaker based system / dedicated listening room kind of guy but that went out the window as soon as I got addicted to the internet / computers way back in 1999.... I found myself spending more and more time in front of the computer and less time in my dedicated / acoustically treated listening room..... so much so I decided to go "headphones" at the computer and convert the listening room into a spare bedroom...... (yeh, boring bastard I know but the way it happened at the time)
My main rig wasn't that exotic consisting of Audiolab amplification (bi-amping), Marantz CD17 KI sig and a pair of handcrafted (read "homemade") Wilmslow audio "vogue" loudspeakers.... the room, however, was VERY exotic (if you consider egg cartons, coconut hair, tube traps, durries, sheeps wool and strategically placed items as "exotic") and that room never had more than one person "me" sitting in it otherwise the whole balance would be ruined......
I spent years in that room and tuned it to my own personal requirements and then the internet came along and spoilt it..... gone were my days sitting with my eyes closed being part of the event and experiencing pinpoint imaging to be replaced by a constant urge to sit looking at a fekkin' monitor and "surfing" through cyberspace.......
It was a sad day when I accepted a couple of grand from a random punter who drove off with all my gear and decided to do my sound at the "terminal"..... shit! What the hell had I done? Got rid of pinpoint imaging, excitement, massive soundstage, good vibes, goose pimples down the neck, a real sense of being part of something SPECIAL and appreciating the event..... bollocks! I'd gone from the REAL thing to some pathetic, warped, "in head" poor substitute in the blink of the eye.......
Yeh....... "headphones"! Never have and never will be anywhere close to stimulating the musical juices in my opinion. They serve a purpose if you like music presented in the middle of your brain, good if you're an anti social bastard on a train wanting to ignore the rest of the world and excellent if you don't have much money and want to hear your favourite tunes with a modicum of precision.
Exciting? hell no! as exciting as receiving a phone bill....... no way have headphones ever come REMOTELY close to loudspeaker listening IMO.... they're anti social, singular, enclosed, contained, congealed and about as energetic as one of these fat bastards you see on morning TV who need a crane to lift them out of the house to the nearest burger joint.
I've done my best to make the best of a bad situation over the years by doing my best to make the best out of a bad situation (that's 4 times I've used the word "best" now!) but however hard I try I can't get headphones to come anywhere close to giving me that sense of being part of the event that only loudspeakers can..... sure, 'phones will give you an insight into every aspect of the recording but they just can't captivate you like a top flight loudspeaker based system can..... NO way Jose!
I'll cut to the chase.............. this little £99 (yes.... ninety nine pound!) all in one system has got me creaming my pants again and has got me ripping CD's out of the rack and salivating like a madman..... It's fckin' INCREDIBLE for the money and, as I said in my opening post, something VERY special.
I'm using it at the computer so effectively it's a NFM (near field monitor for all you that can't decipher condensations of words) and, in all honesty, I couldn't give a flying fekk if I never heard another pair of headphones...... EVER.
Let me repeat the cost of this thing...... £99..... yes! Ninety nine pounds. Positively electrostatic quality Mid / highs courtesy of the NXT flat panel speakers with imaging to DIE for..... the accompanying "sub woofer" is pretty much a joke in stock guise but with a few hot melt glue sticks and bitumen damping this is one hell of a music maker providing TRUE goose pimple moments in abundance.
As with all gear it's down to placement, your ears and room acoustics but get it right and this is SERIOUSLY the audio bargain of the century. I'll say it again.......... the imaging is nothing short of ORGASMIC..... it doesn't go "loud", it doesn't "vibrate the walls", it doesn't "annoy the neighbours" but for £99 it entertains the fekk out of you BIG TIME!
How sad is this? In all my years not only "owning" but also auditioning UBER expensive gear I have yet to hear ANYTHING that comes anywhere close to the midrange performance of this "£99" all in one wonder...... it is TRULY magnificent and shits all over ANY headphones in the "jesus H christ I'm enjoying the music" department.
£99!!!!!.......... you heard it here first. I will follow up with in depth details on how to deaden the resonance in the "sub" woofer (a 4 inch paper / foam roll surround driver btw) basically we are talking a few glue sticks here.......
A little CRACKER!!! (and then some!)

Saw the one with the ipod dock but considering the one I have has an "aux" input then it's not really an inconvenience plugging an ipod (or ANY MP3 player) into it. It's the "£99" bit that sucked me in..... bang for the buck being high on my list of priorities and "features" being pretty low..... sound for the pound is what it's about and this little guy delivers the goods.

oh, and i think esoteric makes teac. they have these new magnesium driver speakers out. they're dynamic but are supposed to be fast as e-statics. they only go down to 38hz though i think. also, pink, you need to try some beyerdynamic dt770. they're are pretty exciting with some music. sound great with johnny cash and bjork type stuff. rock does sound a bit deadened in them due to the poor quality of recording. also, i think this is the US version. $160 www.jr.com/teac/pe/TEA_CDX10I/can this be hooked to a pc? how deep do you think the bass goes on this?
