Should this go in here or in Other Equipment?
Let's see.
So this morning I had to drop the wife and kids off early as they were going on a trip out. I decided to give a car booty a try. I was looking for a cheap vintage amp to use to house a Jaycar HA as I have decided that £35 after shipping & tax is too much for for the Galaxy enclosure that looked so good.
After about 5 minutes I came across a pile of boxes with a Denon tuner on the top Looked down the stack and there were boxes for Denon tape deck and CD player. I couldn't see a name on the bottom box so I moved around the other side of the stack and there is a Arcam Delta amp. I ask the price of the amp and the girl tells me that they are selling everything together, well I'm only interested in the amp, she still wants to sell it all together, forty pounds is what I hear. So I ask again if she will sell the amp seperately, then she calls her husband over and tells him that I want to buy the amp on its' own. Five pounds he says (she must have said four in the first place). I'm in shock at such a low price and agree to take them for a fiver.
Oh, and I've got these he says, in the back of the car is a pair of Linn Index speakers and a bag of cables, all included in the £5.
I pay the man and arrange to pick up after I've been round the rest of the boot fair. It's quieter than it usually is at this venue probably due to yesterdays poor weather and todays bad forcast. I manage to pick up a few CDs & LPs including Jazz at the Pawnshop 2 on CD. But my mind is on the audio gear. I know its in the boot of his car but someone might offer him more and it could be gone before I get back.
I head off back to pick the kit up and take the four boxes back to the car. While piling the boxes up he tells me that he inherited the system from his grandfather. When I go back I ask him on the off chance if there was a record player. He thought it was with the rest of the gear so I have arranged to call him tomorrow to find out if he still has it and who the manufacturer is.
I have dreamed of having a find like this at a booty. it might not be a Garrard 301 or Leak/Quad amps but it was fantastic for me.
I did manage to pick up a vintage amp via Freecycle so the Arcam is staying in tact. The Linn's' tweeters are knackered and the tape deck and tuner will get sold on. The CD player actually turned out to be a Yamaha and I will try it out sometime. It all must be around 10 years old as there was a reciept from Creative Audio in Shrewbury for the newer items.
But the best bit, as far as this forum is concerned is that when I opened the bag of cables there is a pair of Senn HD-545 Reference 'phones. The foam on the headband is shot and the earpads could do with a good clean. But they work well.
Is there anywhere to get a new foam for the headband? Even if I could figure how to get it out I might be able to put some new foam in. And how do you get the earpads off to clean them, they are exactly the same as the HD-600? They will be worth trying with my Blue Moon cable to see if the improve.
Let's see.
