Well... I tried the v8 with 5 different sources, and 5 different headphones... and.... it was unable to achieve reasonable volume levels with any combination, and had excessive hiss / noise at POT levels necessary to drive any of these phones (i.e. 70% to 100% - or 3 O'clock to 5 O'clock).
Sent the amp back to the retailer to check out - they said it was performing up to MF specs. So - I must conclude its a common issue with all of their v8s (unless the retailer was in error).
Since its not the sources, and not a malfunction of the amp - it must be the design. No doubt MF will be "updating" their new v8 - because they'll be getting a lot of these back.
So... I'm returning it for refund.
It does sound pretty good with all headphones when driven by a pre-amp / line stage - but, that shouldn't be necessary.
Just a friendly caution to anyone who might consider buying one.

Sounds like my V2 when a tube got cranky - especially the high level of noise. Then again you'd hope the dealer would spot a problem like that.
