Has any one tried 'Black Gate' caps & 'Audio Note' resistors in the X-Can?? I know they're bloody expensive but was wondering if they made any significant difference for the price? Any comments appreciated. Jezza

I'm not sure who is Bennyboy. But Aurum had used the Audionote tantalum resistors before in others. So u can also PM him as well.
Just my take, IMVHO, the metal film resistors will already sound very good. However, there obviously is other sound quality that you and others prefer in the Audionote resistors that I'm not sure of until we have used them. The BGs are the best of the best electro caps around for use in all audio application. Of course there will be some who prefer them and some not due to cost. However, i like them as it gives me a clearer and less grainy sound. Just imagine the distortion level is at - 176 dB for the NX BP series at the lower frequencies and about -140 dB for the higher frequencies as shown in graphs at BG related websites.

Kind of wasted on most valve amplifiers then, aren't they?

When you say X-Can.... if you are referring to X-CANS or X-Can v2 forget the blackgates unless you don't mind using a shoehorn and a hammer to squeeze them into the enclosure. If it's an X-Can v3 then you'll get them in as there is enough headroom in the enclosure. I have tried them and the cost / performance ratio did nothing to my ears, they take an absolute age to come on song.... there are quite a few fakes about and, as far as I am aware, they are not in current production. Audio Note are the type of audio company that make me want to heave up with everything they sell "the best" or the "only" part that will make your equipment sound "high end", absolute BS most of it, this from their website is just a joke IMO: "Mr. Martin Colloms, of Hifi News fame, wrote a review in the July 2002 issue in high praise of Black Gate™ capacitors. (See piece in the Kit & Component Intro page for more of this.) Martin essentially says that without Black Gate™ capacitors in an audio product, it can hardly be deemed top quality" Bollocks! Sure, they have a use in certain applications but to say a piece of equipment is not top quality unless it has these whacking great things in the circuit is total hogwash! Anyways..... in answer to your question, yes.... I have tried them and didn't like them at all...... there again, maybe I didn't leave them for long enough for my ears to get used to them (cough) sorry..... for them to "burn in"

Try measuring a BG cap for LF distortion and then tell me those things are top quality

If you look at doing it seriously then pm me, & I'll give you some help on which bits are the best bang for the buck.
