Yesterday I recieved a lightly used pair of AKG K271 Studio Having listened to them last night from my Darkvoice amp and then letting them run in a overnight from the headphone output of a CD player on repeat I have to say that I am impressed by these Early on I definitely felt that they needed to open up a bit more and today they seem better. Certainly they are more intimate than my HD600s On the downside I was expecting build quality to be better but I may have been spoilt by the quality of the Senns I have and the ATs that I used to own. I will be keeping these though as I need closed 'phones to block out telly/not disturb Mrs Rossman. If it turns out that I prefer the house sound of AKG to Senns what would be a good open 'phone to try for sensible money i.e. less than £100 and I don't mind buying used. Thanks. Paul

Thanks Nigel, will keep an eye out, they had come up as a possibility in my research for the K271, but how does the K240 stack up. The K501 might be difficult to find. BTW I don't have any problem with the K271 bass which I had read could be lacking in impact or depth. I'm not a bass freak even though some of the music I listen to would seem to indicate that I should be. Quality rather then quantity, within my budget, is my preference. Bass did seem a bit loose direct from the CD player but that isn't a problem as I will be using the amp.

I would say that about 80 hours have now been racked up on these headphones since I recieved them and I am enjoying these even more than I was when I last posted. I can now see why some of the comments about the bass have been made but overall they are excellent. I find that detail and ambience are better than my HD600s.
I did bid on ebay for pair of K501 but was unsuccessful. I really need to save up for a trip to Aus so I wasn't prepared to spend a lot. Plus Mike has agreed to do some mods to my Darkvoice so money for that is more of a priority than new cans at the moment.

Don't you find that switch in the 271 a bit unnecessary? everytime you take the 'phones off your head the music cuts out.... obviously the signal is passing through this switch so the question is....... "will they sound better without the switch?" probably not. I liked the 271 a lot but for some reason got rid of them, the 240 is much the same animal but without the switch..... I like them too they have a lovely warm, almost polypropylene, tone to them... very warm and inviting indeed. Open cans? without a doubt the K-501, superb 'phones and don't believe all the hype about "no bass".... the guys who tell you that are not amping them optimally. They are certainly not 'phones to be used with your average common or garden headout, they require (and benefit from) suitable amplification. Funnily enough, the humble X-CAN v2 does a bloody good job of driving them and synergy can be excellent especially if you've got a good pair of valves under the hood. My first real love affair in headphone listening was with a MF X-Can v2 and AKG K-501. One very important thing to take into consideration....... the K-501 literally take about a year to bed in fully, call me a nutter if you want and tell me there's no such thing as bed in but my ears tell me different Dismiss them as "bass light" after only a brief audition at your peril...... they are one of the truly best headphones money can buy.... give them time

Any thoughts or comments? Thanks. Yeh, save your money and time... if you must throw it away go buy some CD's and enjoy the music. You did ask

Go for it mrarroyo. I've just ordered a Stefan AudioArt Equinox with exactly the same thoughts in mind. I'm currently using van damme instead of the stock but it's only wired to the left driver so the signal is still going through the steel rods etc.
