Wow, it's been a while. But, maybe the "stand back and enjoy the view" (or sound) has been good to do once in a while.
Since I've last posted, I've added a NOS Audio Alchemy DAC in the Box little outboard DAC to my AudioTrak soudcard's digital coax output, then onto either the Solo Green or a mostly Pink Floyd modded X-Cans v.1, then onto the AKG-701's or AudioTechnica ATH-W5000's. I had Doug Jesse at his new company, ASi Mods, put the Pink Floyd mods into the X-cans. Superb amp, now.
I remember being THE AudioTechnica man, here, especially the W-5000's, but I've come to appreciate the full and powerful sound of the AKG-701's, given the right amp for it to shine. The outboard DAC has really smoothed out the digital signal, and the Pink Floyd modded X-Cans v.1 definitely powers them on. I still prefer the Solo Green with the AT's, though, the X-Cans being a little too powerful for the very efficient AT's. Great synergy. Graham, do you own AudioTechnica's? It sounds as though the Solo was "voiced" with the AT's on your ears!
Anyone else born in the Year of the Rat, happy birthday, sort of. The 12 year cycle begins, anew. I've lived now in 7 successive decades. Yeeoow! Hopefully they're successive
Just bought a blues cd last night, "A Bothered Mind", by R.L. Burnside. This fantastic blues man has been aroung a long time, but man does this jam. This one is for the Solo and AT's, it's so rocking.
This is past midnight in the U.K, so goodnight, all.

Hi johnsan, I have AKG K701 and they are very good. I think about buy ATH W5000 - can you tell me more about differences between them? Hi Fritz, Yes, the Audio Technica's are very efficient, and also very vivid and detailed. Unlike the AKG 701's, they can fly on very little power. I like them with the AudioAlchemy headphone amp v.1 that's been modded by Doug here in Detroit. I think you'll find the AKG's very shut in sounding compared to the AT's, that is unless you give them a lot of power. This Pink Floyd modded X-Cans with the pair of 6922 tubes for output and upgraded National Semi Conductor op amp, gives the AKG's plenty of power. Now, the AT's don't need this amp to sound great. So, if you own a Slee Solo Green, the AT's will sound great! I think you'll find that the AKG's don't sound very open on that amp, compared to the AT's. I love the AKG's, now that I have an amp that'll power them. John please see this tread too rockgrotto.proboards39.com/index.cgi?board=review&action=display&thread=1171894655&page=2#1202035918
