In contrast to the speaker world where measurements are an easy task measuring the frequency response of headphones is due to several reasons quite complicated. There is no widely proven and accepted method and therefor the resulting FR graphs are often pretty much useless and at least not easy to interpret.FR graphs made by different people are generally not comparable at all and utilizing such a graph for counterequalization is foolish nonsense.

cosmopragma Don't tell Pincop that! He now has an SR404 with it's proper tube amplifier. It's equalised by a Behringer DEQ 2496 to + and - 1db, and he says it now sounds "gorgeously natural". Much better than he was able to obtain with the Omega. Perhaps you can get lucky sometimes ? SandyK

I mean, maybe this Pincop does have some extremely oddly shaped outer ears that match by chance the response graph made by a random russian with unknown equipment who corrected the measurement data by an algorithm he has found on the internet and that was originally designed for financial analysis.

The FR curve I used was Sandyk's manufacturer's curve which looks very believable. Equalizing it with a DEQ lifts the bass by about 2 db and renders the midrange/treble smoother.
I therefore don't think there is any reason to doubt that the Stax dummy head measurements are not correct. The equalization makes a noticeable difference; the Signatures get a warmer sound.
As regards the OmegaII I wonder if there was perhaps something wrong with the specific set I had. Another possibility that occurred to me is that Stax maybe went overboard in raising the maximum spl (to suit increasing numbers of increasingly deaf potential customers), thereby sacrificing some brilliance.

Pincop Perhaps you noticed how high some members claim they have their headphone amp volume controls set at ? I wonder if they actually have the headphones on their heads at these settings, or leave them on the desk to listen to them ? SandyK

there is a notable increase in sensivitity in the Stax line.My "old as dirt" rebranded setup needs some serious muscle to get moving and it is so extreme I can't just flip the speaker/earspeaker switch back to "speaker" without first banging down the volume control a serious amount or it would be so loud it would startle (96dB efficient loudspeakers ) The best interface for my own particular pair to date is a Nelson Pass 20W Class-A design from 1977 as a dedicated amp for the energizer with the energizer with that 20 watts the minimum I would use with my set having tried my 10W Zen and found it lacking in drive

SandyK,
your idea is brilliant. Staxes as PC speakers! With ear shaped enclosures in pink extruded PVC. I'll see if can convert my old Koss phones.
Cheers,
Pinco
