Could anyone advise me on what effect I might expect from a Stone Audio Equinox replacement cable on my HD650s? These have had something like 700 hours burn in. I have no particular issues with the HD650s, apart from their bass being rather too prominent for my taste. However, I find myself spending more time using my newish Audio Technica W1000s but I have a sort of romantic attachment to the Sennheisers so I'm wondering whether to give them after market cable upgrade. Having read loads of threads extolling the virtues of Cardas, Zu Mobius and other cables, I'm wondering what sort of improvement I might reasonably expect. The reason I'm asking about the Equinox cables is that they are readily available here in the UK.
Needless to say , my headphones are driven by a Solo Green and both in their own ways sound terrific.
Thanks for your attention.

Too prominent bass can be easily resolved by getting the cans a bit further away from your ear. I don't know how easy a 1 or 2mm spacer could be inserted between the headphone and ear cushion. I did just the opposite with my AKG 701s by compressing the cushions I got the tiny bit more bottom end that I thought would make them perfect.

An aftermarket cable will give you a different sound but not necessarily a "better" sound.... try removing the foam pads and replace with something thinner or just run them naked.... as the other man said try them a bit further away from your ears. IIRC the green solo has an output impedance of 32 ohm you could also try a 90ohm resistor in series, this will change things slightly.

Many thanks friends for the thoughtful and helpful replies. I've decided not to bother fiddling around with the HD650s. They are nice 'phones, if not to my taste, perfect.
I was listening to some very heavy organ music the other night with very low bass notes recorded in a Cathedral. The HD650s rendering of the physical hum of an organ's lower register was awesome. I could feel the bass in my kidneys! My problem with the HD650s bass is mainly on bluesy or rock tracks where the bass becomes too prominent to the extent that it overwhelms the melody.
I expect to receive marrayo's ATH W5000s any day now and if they sound as good as the W1000s I sold to Eric I'll be very happy that I have these two sets of 'phones giving me the option of using either according to my mood.
Thanks again.

There's a real industry in aftermarket cables for the HD series. I use the Cardas with my HD650, simply because I bought it as an upgrade to the HD600's I was using at the time. I guess I would agree with Mike, different but not necessarily better.

I just got the HD650 (with original cable) + SAA equinox I find the stock HD650 has too much bass and too dark as well Changing to SAA equinox cable brings does bring some improvement but it's definitely not worth the money in my opinion But this is only very very brief listening (about 30 minutes) and I will make further comment after more thorough listening I have a feeling that HD650 is just not for me.I have the HD540 and I love them but find the sound a little bit too thin and there's the reason why I wanted to try out the hd650s but the initial impression is that I prefer HD540 much more.Might give HD600 a try later

I have the Zu Mobious (Mk1) - In brief .. they add some sparkle to the HD650, have a definate top end advantage, seemed less muddy (veiled), and overall I prefered the sound listening to HD650s with the X-CAN V3 with the Zu Mobs. Standards I think seem to emphasise the bottom end more .. where as these are more balanced.
I've not swopped back to the standards with the Green Solo - might be worth a dabble!
The Zu Mobs do however having an annoying habit of dropping a channel .. this is just a connector issue common on Mk1s - a little push and all is well again.
