Out of interest how many of you guys have tried these cans? How do they compare to other cans?
I chose them as my first set of Audiophile cans after extensive research on the net. I have heard only good things about them.
I've had mine a good few months now and although I believe there are certaimly better cans out there. At £75 off flea bay these have proved to be an excellent all rounder.
They have proved to be great with all sorts of music from Dance, Jazz and Blues, through Rock, Metal, Classical and Choral. In fact you name a genre and I quite likely listen to it (NOT COUNTRY THOUGH!)
The Solo amp has really opened them out too, producing a wide and deep soundstage. Bass is deep and powerful but not over done. Mids are warm but again not overly so. Likewise the high end is sweet and detailed but not too bright. Very neutral through the solo.
Very comfortable. I can wear them for hours with the only possible problem being hot ear but that's when I'm warm to start with so not the cans fault.
My only gripe is the lead is prone to twisting which is a bit annoying. They are however terminated in a 1/4 inch jack which is bonus for a cheapish can.

Yeah I got a pair just the other week. To be honest I'm not really digging it.
I guess it's a good unoffensive phone all round, but does nothing well. Just average.
Everything from top to bottom sounds a little suppressed ie. this so called "veil" but this being my second pair of Sennheisers I am now beginning to understand this concept.

I don't have 595's but I havae a pair of ...... <<<<whsipers 555's. I think that little nub in the ear piece adds to some of the dynamics. But I really dont know because those were my first, and now I have a pair of 580's. I thought about going 595's, but 580's were getting so low in supply I jumped on them. If you're in the states, and would be interested in swapping 595 for 580's for a week or so, I'd be game if it would help you determine how you wanted to go.
I originally went with Senn's because of the warmth ( veil for all you evil doers : ) ) because a lot/most of what I listen to is late 60's on up soundboard and audience recordings that can be harsh. But I tell ya, there is a group of people that are taking original master analog tapes, that have been cooked and cared for and mastering ( not remastering or doing anything but to improve the sound where needed , removing dropouts, pops, and whatnot ) it through current gear that is just jaw dropping.
I guess I don't mind the veil because I expect to have to use the EQ where needed, and both the 555 and 580 respond well. I don't know enough yet but I assume that to be the case with most headphones. Can't wait until I can find out though, yes I can, I got bigger fish to fry before I get another set of headphones..... yes, chants over and over, no new cans, no new cans,no new cans....... for awhile.

much prefer my modded HD580s over the HD595
and I don't even really like those HD580s, so that's saying something!

dc, if you've only had the 595s a week they have a lot of bedding in to do. My pair sound so much better than they did when new that it really is like a different set of cans. They needed at least 120 - 150 hours to even begin to shine and now several hundred hours later they are really nice.
Sorry Charley I'm in the UK.
As for the sennheiser veil. Sometimes I think I can hear it but at other times the music is so crystal clear that I believe it's more likely me not being in the right mood rather than the infamous "veil"
I like the HD595s very much but that said, my next major purchase will be a pair of AKG k701s but not for a couple of months at least. When I get them and bed them in I'll do a comparison. Should be a no contest tbh as the K701s are 3 times the price.

I bought them used with reportedly 200 hours on them
I might let them cook for a few days anyway, I was that unimpressed I haven't listened to them much at all...

I have a nice Hi-Fi + comparison review, HD650 / Stax 4040 / 325i / DT990 / HD595's.
The HD595's faired very well against the stiff opposition.

I have a set of 595's i think there great. For £75 i think they sound superb. Obviously you can get better but your looking at a big step up in the price. They do seem to suit all music types. I don't think they are as good as the hd600's as they lack the attention to detail in the music, but otherwise i'm happy with them. I think they look pretty cool too. You do get what you pay for with these and at £75 i think they sound sweet!

If possible Toad you should try a pair of more expensive cans first before splashing out, you already seem happy with HD595's. Not meaning to put you off but its possible you may not feel the upgrade is worth the expense, its even possible you may not like the newer ones as much, headphones are such a personnel thing IMO

I like a neutral sound so that rules out the HD-650 due to their bass hump. The ATH D2000s reputedly sound similar to the HD595s and I presume the w1000s and W5000s are similar to those so that leaves me with the AKG K701s or Beyer DT880s which have both had very nice reviews but I lean towards the K701s as they seem to have the kind of sound signature I'm looking for. Don't get me wrong I do like the HD595s and If I had to stick with them I wouldn't be that disappointed but since this is the only expensive hobby I have I feel I can afford to treat myself every few months It's either that or save up for a huge flat screen TV to complement my AV system but I spend much more time with the headphones on than watching TV or Movies.

Well I'd say my K701's are well run in now, fresh out the box they was awful but things have come on a lot since then. With the Solo I get a very fast and detailed sound, I can hear my source more with these than I did with the old 540 reference. I personally don't care for a warm smooth sound, a few on here rate the W1000's over the AKG's but tbh I'm more than happy with the K701's, you obviously don't get that heavy bottom end but I think these cans are accurate, with a poor source they can sound sharp/hard at the top.
I've not heard the Beyers

Heard 595 just once quite a while ago... As I recall it 595's were bright. Brighter and in comparison with HD600 sounded just plainly "cheaper" (dynamics and separation) through X-Can V2. In voice+few instrument pieces HD595 was OK, but when things got complicated, like in some symphonic crescendo, it just "glued" instruments together. As dc, I also would prefer HD580 over HD595 as I consider HD580 as "less perfect" HD600, but HD580 are discontinued. Did not compare HD595 with K701 at the time I listened to HD595 - there was no K701. But for what is worth - K701 are just slightly brighter, have better resolution, wider sound-staging and "immersed" listener position in comparison to HD600. So, perhaps, this list can be added on top of HD595 vs. HD600 differences listed before. As for W1000 - dare to say that they have even more detail than K701 - yet this does not distract from the music which just flows into you. Staging is narrower but not confusing (sometimes K701 pictures instruments at 7:30 or 4:30 behind me?!?). There is not much "air" around instruments - since they are closed type. For the same reason you can listen at lower volume (more relaxing). All four mentioned headphones (HD600, HD580, K701, W1000) are, in my opinion, in higher class than HD595. How much higher and do their respective prices reflect appropriately this "class difference" is arguable. Toad: As I see - you do have "green" Solo... Treat yourself further - K701 are good option. If not anything - just to see what lies "on the other side of Sennheiser fence". You can always ask FritzS about Solo+K701 combination (but we already know the answer )...

Are the W1000's much better than the A900's?

I knew I'd read this somewhere Leo.
A quote from Mike in a different thread:
"I shall be ordering the A900 in the not too distant future, from all accounts they are along the same lines as the W1000 or possibly as good / better I think you will be safe buying either. Graham has a good ear and favours the A900 with his Solo so, considering you are getting a Solo, they may be well worth trying."

Good find Toad I was just thinking aren't the A900's cheaper than the K701's? maybe worth considering those too?
