Just for headphones the W1000 is not as good as the W5000 but with the right amplification the W1000 (Yamamoto HA-02) can sound magical. mrarroyo, Venus has the Yamamoto as a demo unit for $575 but it may be gone before you can get to it. audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=140116

i bought the w1000 so i can a/b it with the w5000 on the yamamoto. so far only have a few hours on it, bought it brand new. my first reaction when i put the w1000 on is: it sound exactly the same as the w5000, they both have very similar sound signature. after listening to it for a while , i can see the w1000 has slightly brighter and forward sound, switching over to the w5000, i can see the w5000 has slightly bigger soundstage, deeper bass, sound a bit darker and laid back. overall they share very similar sound signature. these are all early day impression, i will let the w1000 burn in a bit more and do more listening to both before i decide which is to keep. i had also read that the w5000 is very picky with amp.

If there's that little in it then surely the W1000 are the better buy...... if the W-5000 were reported as a "considerable" improvement over the W-1000 then maybe they're worth the price tag but if the only real gripe is the pleather pads on the W-1000 V the leather pads on the W-5000 then what the hell......... I can open the windows up and let a bit of cold air circulate around the room To be honest, I don't like the choice of wood on either 'phone.... the W-5000 certainly doesn't "look" any better to my eyes.... they both look pretty vulgar in the wood department IMO.....

just sold my w1000. after 2 months of listening to both headphone with some of the same tracks over and over again, the subtle different between the 2 headphones just became too obvious to me. every time when i was listening to the w1000, i thought, wow this headphone is good, but then when i switch over the the w5000, and listen to the same track again, and said wow, this is even better. i love the air between the instrument separation, the bass of the w5000 , go deep with texture. the w5000 will be my reference headphone for now, i own the k701,k340, k240 and had heard of other's hd650, dt990, dt880 ,rs-1, k501, imo, none of them came close to the w5000. my wish list is to hear the r-10, l3000, o2, he90,he60

I really enjoyed the W5000s a lot when I had them but I moved on the the Edition 9 and now the HFI-780 from Ultrasone is almost as good as the UE9 . I almost purchased another UE9 on a whim I got these before the UE9 was delivered so I canceled my back ordered UE9. For the price the HFI-780 may be something you want to consider in the future to at least listen too.
