This thread prompted me dig out my SR-225's which in turn lead me this thread started by Mike: rockgrotto.proboards39.com/index.cgi?board=review&action=display&thread=1193036158Can't see how I missed it and can't believe that I haven't tried the Grado's with my Samwha'd X-can V1. My only excuse is that my 580's arrived at the same time as Mikes excellently rebuilt amp and I was running the 2 in at the same time and they sounded so good I didn't want to change However I now have - What a fantastic combination Lusciously rich, with great drive and Slam. Delightful with female vocals - Nina Simone, awesome with ZZ TOP and organ music and a riot with Opera - currently listening to Figaro, Admittedly detail presentation isn't perhaps as good as the Sennheisers but the sheer brio of this combination takes some beating. By the way I have a set of ttvj flats - well worth acquiring If you can.

Nothing to do with Grado 'phones (so what is different there ?) - I was looking for a replacement motherboard for a proprietary desktop PC the other week, found a source in NY - only $US15 or thereabouts for the board - $US250 for insured courier delivery to Oz. I bought a barebones case locally for $90 and got a spare power supply to boot. All the other US sellers would have cost me over $AUD100 just for a board. I could nearly send myself halfway to the US for $250.

I thought if you turn the bowls the opposite way it gave the same effect as 'flats' ?

Hi dc,
Well I currently have the 'phones linked up to a good old Rotel tuna approaching 48 hours of burn in. I've probably listened to them for four hours total, initial impressions are very positive. As you know I'm using them with the Green Solo / LM4562, I was expecting them to be brighter than direct sunlight shining in your eyes but no, not to my ears anyway.
Some comfort issues, light as a feather & I wouldn't call them uncomfortable but they take some getting used to. I'm using the Beyer DT 990 / 770 headband with them so this provides top of the head padding.
I can't use them with the Green Solo at the magical 9 o'clock position with a cd source, you would certainly cause hearing damage listening at this level before too long. Vinyl is different, so plenty of travel on the volume pot there.
I don't know about these being the guitar headphones, deffo bass guitar headphones though. I heard Zeppelin's 'Achilles Last Stand' from the "Presence" LP & was suitably impressed with the way it portrayed John-Paul Jones remarkable chugga chugg bass.
Up to now then, very enjoyable musical headphones. Slightly idiosyncratic but bags of fun.

i don't really know if i want to move up the grado scale based on my current experience
Nigel: good to see you're enjoying them... definitely a bass guitar phone, really rockin'
maybe I need to get hold of one of these green solos...

well i did the tape mod on my bowl pads
i understand why it's called the bass-heads mod, it really fleshes the bass and to some degree the mids. can listen at lower volumes now as the treble sizzle still remains
pretty good i guess... puts them acceptable for every day listening without tubes. as far as i can tell it hasn't really affected treble and what's good about the phone, just beefed up the bottom end
will need to have a close listen, definitely a fun headphone now though

I think the comfort problem is the mesh covering the driver rubbing against the ear. I'm approaching 72 hours of burn in now.
Another thing, the cable is a lot smaller in length than the Cardas. I wonder if anyone has re-cabled Grado's?

I wonder if anyone has re-cabled Grado's? Yes you can buy Grado's w/ Moon Audio's cables (silver dragon, black dragon, ...). In adition Headphile w/ recable up to the 325i, and Alex of APureSound recables to RS-1 and RS-2.

Some Grado SR225 thoughts, < HI-FI Choice "Music flows through this headphone organically and believably, with irrepressible dynamics and bounce." HI-FI Choice Recommended "Sounding very good at both low and high levels, these headphones are of reference quality both for the classical virtues of neutral frequency response and low coloration, as well as for their clarity and the high degree of listener involvement envoked." HI-FI News & Record Review / Martin Colloms "The SR225s sound unlike any other headphone. They have an amazingly solid presentation, packed with weight and presence. There is also a pleasant richness in the midrange that benefits all types of music." WHAT Hi-Fi "When it comes to classical music, the Grados reproduce instruments with both believable timbre and solidity. The treble boosts fine detail and no hint of agression. ... these Grados are hard to beat!" WHAT Hi-Fi >

Just got some Grado flat pads as well as some Headphile C-padsinitial impressions flat pads: wow what happened to the treble? these are even bassier than the HD414 pads and more treble roll off, pretty uncomfortable too. don't know what the hell is going on but it seems like these are disintegrating on me, all fine black dust all over the place. read about this somewhere but this is BAD c-pads: haven't had long enough to play with them, they're basically beyerdynamic DTxx0 pads on some sort of adaptor for grado phones. seems interesting, very different presentation, seems like it's going for wider soundstage at the expense of both ends of the spectrum, but i haven't had much time to play with it just yet

Hi dc,
I wasn't impressed with those yellow Senn pads myself. A lot of people love them though.

maybe this is why so many people like the flat pads, they make the grados sound so, un-grado-like

did you get the comfy pads (the ones on the sr60) or the flat pads? the flat pads should sound mmuch tighter than the senn pads.

definitely flat pads, as sold by ttvj
well that's what i was expecting - brighter treble and tighter bass
it's the opposite of what i'm hearing them, the bowls are brightest
maybe it wasn't made for the HF-1? or am i wearing them wrong??? i'm putting them on like in everyone else's pictures...

dc,
What's your thoughts regarding the cable? I've a feeling improvements could be made.

I don't have much experience with cables in general
but this cable doesn't sit well, always twisting etc.

I emailed Larry at Headphile to enquire about cable options. Unfortunately, he doesn't supply the cable, you have to send the headphones to him.

mrarroyo,
Have you heard any of the Headphile Grado cable upgrades at all? Interested to hear your thoughts.
