I can't wait to get them! so what should I expect!? I have listened to them one time, I thought they sounded better than the 650 I had. Has anyone compred how detailed they are compared to 650? Do they need a lot of burn in? Ah, just want to talk about them cause the waiting is the hard part ;D LOL.

HD650 are apparently focused around 'character' as opposed to the detail the 600s excel in.

Thats just what I hoped for and thought so my self when I listened to them for a short while some weeks ago. I thoght 650 had to much character and got tired of it when I owned them. My D2000 has quite a lot of it to, thats why I want a more neutral listening and something that works for classical. The k701 sounds a little to thin and has little to much treble, for my taste.

You'll love them! Still my favourite headphones of the lot, they never fail to please whatever you throw at them. Allow them a good few weeks to bed in and a further few "months" for the pads to bed in fully around your ears. Both Nigel and myself have found that the HD6** pads make one helluva difference to the SQ..... give them a few months to relax and every couple of months take them off and give them a wash with some shampoo / lukewarm water...... rinse thoroughly........ allow to dry......this keeps them clean and also keeps them relatively "springy". I've been running the same set of pads since 2002 and these 'phones just get better and better the older they get.
As I say...... you'll love them!

After trying both the 600 and 650 I also much preferred the 600's, they are decent cans. Agreed the 600's are very comfy but I preferred the K701's for sound.

they share the driver element, HD600 reportedly closer matched, 0.05dB as opposed to 0.1 of the HD580 if i remember correctly
and the grille on the HD580 is plastic whereas the HD600 is wire mesh

Nice to hear that they keep getting better I liked the hd650 at first but after some months I almost lost interest in listening to music, I got tired and fell a sleep listening to them, they where to honey sweet, I can miss it sometimes though but the 600 seems more balanced through the frequency and a little "dryer" I had a pair of hd 595 that I thought got better and better, the sound really growed on me. Hope the 600 will be a good compliment to my lively and punchy D2000. I have heard some people complain about them being slow, I didn't think my 650 was slow. Do the 600 have any problems with dynamic music?

Pinkfloyd : Have you changed your mind on the ATH-W1000s then? No no..... BUT, the HD-600 are still my favourite "allrounders" when I just want to sit back and relax with an "old glove" like sound the 600's are just the puppies for the job

If you had to choose between the two as a starting pair of phones for the solo, which would you pick? I'm interested in both for use with the solo but can't decide between them. Aside from ER4 P/S these will be my first pair of audiophile phones.

etymotics aren't audiophile. they're part of a conspiracy to get people to lose their hearing and then of course, buy hearing aids.

try something with a bottom end and then speak. go ahead, buy some atrios. i'm getting more detail through all ranges + bass... better and deeper bass than i've ever heard come out of anything.
