Hi all,
Can you guys recommend me some cheap headphones. By cheap I mean around the £40-£50 mark. I have HD595s at home but don't want to carry them to and from the office each day. I have some PX-100s that I carry about but I'd like something a little more refined for when I'm relaxing at lunchtime. I do like the Sennheiser sound signature but I'm willing to try other flavors.
Thanks in advance for suggesions.
Ian

Are there going to be others in your immediate vecinity? I ask because you may need a close can so as not to bother them. If yes the Equation RP21 is a fantastic can for the money, you could also look at Audio-Technica ATH-A700 Art.

Well I have my own office so open cans aren't a problem.
Funny you should mention the RP-21s I was researching them at lunchtime and found them on ebay at £45 from a UK seller I've used before so they are high on my list of possibilities especially bearing in mind the reaction by you and others to them over on headfi.

If you like your cans to have a bass heavy presentation they are fantastic. Also at about $100 I do not know of any other can that comes close. Let RP21 burn in for about 150 hours, if you find the bass still heavy the cotton mods I posted here would significantly reduce it. Good luck.

Thanks for the info and pointer to the cotton baffles Miguel. The RP21s do look very promising ... especially in the light of the competition ;D
Anyone else got any cheap cans they can recommend?

The Goldring DR-100 may possibly be a very good buy at around the £35 mark. Smaller brother to the very good DR-150 which sell for between £50 - £60. details here: www.goldring.co.uk/headphones/dr100.htm

Sennheiser HD 555 - I got a pair of these as a 2nd set of headphones to my HD 650s. I reckon they come pretty close and are much nicer than the HD 595s, which I absolutley hated - eeeeyuk.

I second Mike's comment on the Goldring DR150. Used units sell in the USA for about $80 or 40 BP. There is a piece of plastic that the manufacturer leaves and should be removed.
If you buy the DR150 there are some good pictures here in another thread showing how to remove said plastic.

Thanks all. I'm leaning towards the DR150s or the RP-21s at the moment but I'm still open to suggestions if anyone else wants to join the fray.

The AKG K81 were FOTM on Headfi a while back. I don't know how they compare to the DR150's or RP-21's as I've never tried those, but they can be had for around £35 new. They are a little bass heavy, but there's a long thread about them on Headfi with some modding suggestions in.
