Mike, I have the A900's and it took some time to get used to the "wings". As you might have read I prefer the AT's over the HD600's, I have had the HD600's on loan and returned them yesterday. My other cans at the moment are the DR-150's, I like those alot too but in my opinion not in the same league as the A900's. But now I'm drooling over the W-1000's...... Sigh...sigh..., damn I'm going to poor me another Macallan to calm down again.... Dennis.

I have been giving them a damned good old fashioned leathering for a few hours now on a radiator with them inside two pillows..... I will slip them onto my head in a couple of hours and see what the state of play is.... from my experience with all headphones they benefit from a good thrashing in a warm place, it gives them a chance to flex and bed in to their optimal working environment..... unfortunately you cannot power bed things like the ear pads, you have to allow them to "form" around your ears naturally and even 1mm closer to the ears brings about a marked difference to the sound with it being fuller and more bassy..... try pressing the phones in toward your head very slightly with both your index fingers, you will hear what I mean. Now it makes sense that as the pads soften the diaphragms will gradually get closer and closer to your ears, this is an integral part of bedding the 'phones in, it may only be a couple of millimetres but those couple of millimetres make all the difference

What lovely looking pair you have there I bet they look even better in the flesh too don't they Mike Look forward to your report once they have had a good run in They look 10 times better in the flesh leo, top quality build and a wonderful feel to them with the solid cherry cups. Comfort is actually superb, I'm not conscious of the wings on my head and believe me I do not have a small head! I am already so impressed with these that I am looking at the open backed ADH-AD2000 ( a few pics and comments here: www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=231843 ) and these will definitely be the next pair of open 'phones I purchase. With the W1000 on my head I feel as if I should be smoking a fine Cuban cigar and sipping some brandy out of a large warmed glass, they just exude class not only in their appearance / feel but also in the sonic department. They have only been bedding in for a few hours but are already revealing things in the music the Sennheisers are just not capable of letting through. What is absolutely incredible is the soundstage is actually wider than the senns and these are closed back 'phones?? Absolutely amazing considering they are closed back and quite how AT have managed to pull that off is anyone's guess, pull it off they have though! I never quite understood what people meant when they commented on the Sennheiser "veil".... now I do! The W1000 are by far more revealing, more engaging and much more dynamic than the Senns (HD-600) there is a wonderful energy and "bounce" to the music and going back over to the Senns it's like watching TV in black and white as opposed to in colour.... bass is dry sounding, mids are recessed and overall presentation is "veiled" in comparison with the W1000s liquid, revealing, energetic and detailed presentation. You'd expect a closed back design to do bass well and BOY do the W1000s do it extremely well Not over emphasised, not over powering but beatifully taut and extended just the way it should be.... it's almost as if the bass is hitting you externally from a hidden woofer in the floor but it isn't, it's coming from the headphones themselves..... this is a major plus point, with the Senns you know the bass is head orientated, with the W1000 you're not sure.... at times it seems it's coming at you from outside the 'phones, bloody fantastic! I've mentioned Cuban cigars and brandy and can only come up with that kind of anology for these 'phones, to say I haven't heard headphones sound this good would be an understatement and I can only assume this is what certain people refer to as "high end" sound. If High end means better than you have heard before by quite some margin, and in spade loads then consider these guys "high end". The "weight", the grandeur, the balance, the detail, the seperation, the "scale", the depth and the sheer ability these 'phones have to drag you into the depths of the music is ASTOUNDING.... and this is after a few hours fresh from the box? Make no mistake, these are bloody incredible and knock seven different colours of shit out of my favourite HD-600 BIG STYLE. I was led to believe from an early age in audio that Japanese gear was tuned to the Japanese ear and anything japanese would have to be "tuned down" by a British "guru" to sound good to us here in the UK.... they waffled on about "timing" and the "british sound" and, quite frankly, sold us a watered down (a stripped to the bone) version of the fully fledged unit the Japanese were getting.... it was all BULLSHIT, they were selling us stripped down versions so they could make more profit! The W1000 confirm this, they are clearly the best 'phones I have ever heard and straight from Japan too! No stripping down or "tuned" for the UK market here.... the real deal at a realistic price..... put one of these UK "distributors" into the equation and expect to pay double or even treble. Give me the neat Japanese product over the watered down / stripped to the bone British con job any day! Forget bed in (or burn in) these 'phones crap all over a pair of very well bedded in Senns fresh from the box in EVERY department. I know what I'm hearing, I have not been drinking or taking mind altering drugs, these are in a different (very audible) league from the Senns (I won't even mention the Grados as they are bloody awful, overrated and "over here" shitfests being sold at exorbitant prices by the boutiques.... ear torturing devices IMO, if you must waste money the least you can do is buy something that sounds half decent and works with 99% of the amps on the market ;D) RUN, don't walk, to your nearest keyboard and order a pair of these puppies you will not be disappointed..... absolute class on a stick!!!!!!! And remember, this coming from the guy who always waits months before commenting on things..... sorry, these are too good, they deserve immediate praise! Rock on Japan!

According to Audio Technica "UK" the ATH-AD700 are as far as we dare go up "the range" or should I rephrase that.... as far as they will officially let us go.... I see no reference to anything above the ATH-AD700 on the AT UK website this kind of thing REALLY annoys me, bloody assholes wearing suits dictating what's "acceptable" fodder for the UK market and what they can get the highest mark up (profit) on........ and they think we don't know what they're playing at? It's diabolical. Thanks to the internet and the guys who break the barriers we can stick two fingers up in their general direction and take our custom elsewhere.... they don't deserve custom the way they compartmentalise us, tell lies and rip their customers off left right and centre..... fck em.

I tell you one thing Mr Pink, you have a certain way with words & expressions when you are describing equipment, in this case headphones, that makes me wanna pair right now. It's known as "speaking your mind" Nigel and telling the truth. There is far too much bullshit spoken in this game, I'm sick of it.... time to tell the truth as I see it or throw myself off the nearest cliff (not far) I say it as I hear it, end of and 9 times out of ten my observations are quite accurate Why tentatively dip your toe in and spend your time being frightened to offend the status quo? Life's too short for that bullshit, let's have the truth whilst we are still alive and have time to act on it. Buy a pair I guarantee you that you will want to have my babies you will be that happy with them. Mike.

Graham has a good ear and favours the A900 with his Solo so, considering you are getting a Solo, they may be well worth trying. I see you have a fellow Austrian on board now Mike.

Like I told you Mike, I had the same experience when comparing the HD600's to the A900's... A900's became instantly my favourite cans putting the Senns in the dust corner. I want those W-1000's too..... want them, want them, want them.. want them.... ( new mantra ) Enjoy!! Dennis.
