Let's not go down the "I think the AD - ABC sounds better than the AD - XYZ" route without actually hearing them. Why not? Hi-Fi World did exactly that with Stewart Wennen's review of my Era Gold to favour the Dino! I think I'll repro both versions right here to show you all what goes on Oh, and while we're on the subject of thinking that ABC sounds better than XYZ without actually hearing it.... Mike? Let us not fall into hypocrisy. And for the record I'm not guilty - I said "so maybe he is right about the A900?" - which is a question indicated by the use of a question mark.

~ snip ~ it appears possible that wooden cups might offer different resonance to the alloy cups ~ snip ~ Different material in places man and, as we all know, different materials don't all sound the same! ~ snip ~ It looks to me like that is what I said. Since I already own W-1000, I would rather hope that I did not pay nearly double just for appearance - around $US415 v $US215 delivered. While they do not mention 8N OFC in relation to the A900 I would expect that to be marketing rather than manufacturing when they use an otherwise same spec driver but maybe they do make a "special" version of the driver with a slight upspecced coil.

Let's not go down the "I think the AD - ABC sounds better than the AD - XYZ" route without actually hearing them. Why not? Hi-Fi World did exactly that with Stewart Wennen's review of my Era Gold to favour the Dino! You mean he has never actually heard your Era Gold? I used to think that happened quite a lot where I would have a particular piece of equipment and some reviewer was "allegedly" comparing that piece of equipment to another....... it was obvious he had never heard it as he was speaking a crock of bullshit! It would be interesting to see the above mentioned "review" Yes, do. I take it you are referring to me saying I preferred the ATH- W100 over the ATH -A900? At the time I purchased the W100 (Mail order from a shop in London) I was living in Fife and took the W100 over to Mountain Snow in Aberdeen to audition a CDP.... it happens they are Audio Technica stockists and I got to compare 900 to my 1000 (the guy in the shop was well interested too as he had never seen a W100 let alone heard one!) The two of us agreed the W100 had the edge in that it sounded slightly less bright and (here we go!) "looked better" ;D There wasn't a "lot" in it but most certainly enough to make you aware you were listening to something REALLY special with the W100 as opposed to something special... some guy mentioned "organic" and that was how I'd class the difference with the A900 being a superb headphone with a slightly synthetic sounding presentation and the W100 being more organic in the way it presented music. This is all from memory and totally not inkeeping with the usual side by side prolonged comparo but I left that shop with W100 in hand "happy" and not wishing I'd bought the 900's instead.... the guy in the shop was pretty impressed with the W100 too and admitted that his "top of the range" AD 900 (as he thought they were) had just been shown a clean pair of heels. If you're not referring to AD900 v W100 I'd be interested to learn what you are referring to Graham A very easy thing to fall into but something I try my best not to do. I have never knowingly compared A with B without having listened to both (and, usually over a very long period of time) I most certainly don't "imagine" a product and do a comparo "imagining" what the competition sounds like. Life really is too short to fck' about wasting time and effort on phantom products. Who said anything about guilt? you have your opinions, you are entitled to voice them mate. Whether they be opinions about the best turntable in the world (Technics SL-1210 MKll according to you) or the best headphone amp in the world (don't tell me......... the Solo?) or the best cartridge in the world, the AT95SE (according to you again) I don't have a problem with that..... opininions are like arseholes, everybody has their own.... It's all good banter man and feel free to shart your opinions all over the forum...... I've been sharting mine for years.... don't get pissed off when someone doesn't agree with you though and has opinions of their own Right......... getting this thread back on track, the Pricejapan W1000's are presently: September 22, 2007 19:25 Nagoya - Japan Departed from DHL facility in Nagoya - Japan. Where's Nagoya? Is that within power catapult distance of Scotland? Maybe they could catapult the W1000 over to me, that would deffo bypass the customs gestapo..... Hitler managed to fire over doodle bugs with pin point accuracy you'd think the Japs would have improved on the technology and be able to launch a pair of headphones from deepest Japan straight into your back garden......... technology and global community my ROYAL arsehole! Global fckin' mess more like... I want my headphones delivered like a burger...... "FAST" I want to eat the bastard right now, not wait for a camel to deliver it............ That's almost a DAY now and still no sightings of my headphones from Japan..... this is a disgrace! I want them now... WANT WANT WANT WANT........ oh shit, what a nation of wrapped up in cotton wool "want it now" wankers we have become. Bring back national service. Mike. (off to CONSUME resources)

WOW!! Pricejapan are good, they are VERY good! Extremely good price, rapid shipping with full tracking along the way, extremely well packaged. One of the best purchasing expereriences I have ever come across.... 10 / 10 The headphones are simply INSANE quality, jeez these make the Sennheiser HD-600 look like plastic toys you get in a goody bag in comparison. They are bedding in right this minute but from first listen they are absolulety heavenly and most definitely (I can tell already) the most musical pair of cans I have ever had on my lugholes. Listening to Shpongle "are you Shpongled?" there seriously is detail coming forth that I have never for the life of me heard before and spadeloads of it. Oooooooh mama I'm in for a right treat tonight and will probably end up dragging all my favourite (and not so favourite) CDs out and make a night of it.... Solo is powering them at the moment and all I can say every time I stick these on my noggin is WOW!! or "HOLY TORPEDO BATMAN!!" Quality on a stick!

How was the duty? Did you get hit .... seemingly everything inbound now has VAT and duty added - new and second hand.

Speechless.................... Dennis. Take that with a pinch of salt Dennis but do remember I am comparing titanium, solid wood and cloth wrapped cable to "plastic" here. However well the plastic is worked it is still "plastic" and compared to wood it looks and feels cheap to me.... I was commenting on appearance and build quality, not on sound quality, it may transpire that I still regard the Senns as my favourite (jack of all trades) 'phones once I compare the two when the W1000's have fully bedded in. I'm driving the arse off them right now so hopefully the drivers will have loosened up a tad by this evening, you can just sense they are tight and have a fair bit of exercise to do before they will give off their best..... even the pads have to relax into the ears, if you press the 'phones onto your ears with your hands ever so slightly you'll find the bass becomes a lot deeper.... there is more to bed in than simply giving the drivers a damned good thrashing and sometimes it takes months before the pads find their sweet spot around your ears.... I will give the pads a good workout later by repeatedly squeezing them in and out in front of a radiator.... they also benefit from being on a hot head for a while, I think I can organise that

I've actually cancelled the ATH-900 loaners. The experience with pricejapan has been nothing short of excellent and seeing their prices are SO good I am going to actually buy a pair of the ATH-900s and the W1000 & 900s can both bed in from new on my head I must get the yellow bear out of the cupboard for a photo shoot, he will be pleased to get an airing and get the opportunity to listen to these cans

They look good, Mike. Are they comfortable to wear? Self adjusting wings, the seem extremely comfortable but I will let you know what they are like after a prolonged listen. I do the remember the ATH-W100 used to get very hot around my ears after a while..... heat aside, they are extremely comfy on the pink noggin.
