The sound should be close to AKG 701 or Sennheiser HD600 - I hear pop, classic, jazz, ethno, .....
Sennheiser HD 250-II HD 280 PRO Beyerdynamic DT 250, 250 Ohm AKG K271 Pro
Ultrasone PROline 750 HFI-700

AT-W100 AT-W1000 are fantastic closed headphones Fritz and they'll blow your brains out of you crank 'em up. Graham really likes the HD-250 ll linear and rates them as a lot more accurate than the HD-600..... may be worth a punt?
Lini is the man to ask about the AKG closed backs, he has experience of all of them. I tried the AKG K-240 studio and really liked them, I wasn't at all keen on the K-271 the integral on / off switch got on my nerves.

I just received a pair of Audio Technica W-5000 here in the US, and they do scare me a bit, Mike, as I can crank them and not realize how loud it really has gotten. They're still burning in, but these will go!

Hi all I have Senn HD580 which even though i mainly listen to rock I like the sound (they were a bit bass light until i build a headphone amp to go with them). Anyway the wife and son are sick of been woken on a night so hence its time for some closed back one. Are the Audio Technica ones best for volume also or the AKG? Something like www.iheadphones.co.uk/headphones/22772/Audio+Technica+ATH-A900+Art+Headphones.htmGuess I will have try and listen to some in a shop.... Regards John

Good to see Mike approves of the ATH-W1000, they are my first venture into serious phones. Have had a pair of Roland RH50 for a few years - mainly for PC sound work, did not find them very comfortable and they have not had a lot of use. The ATs are a whole 'nother thing - am absolutely loving them, very comfortable. For me, their tonal balance is very similar to my speaker system, so works very well. Had them a few months now, the low impedance is a real bonus as I only just received my amp (burning it in ATM) and have been running them from the socket on either an M-audio Firewire or a Terratec DMX 6fire - listening to Accuradio (thanks johnsan) jazz while burning in the amp - they sound superb - particularly given the source. I like a fairly wide range of music, chamber music, jazz, rock/pop, classical, world, fem vocal. 9 o'clock on the dial with Yello, Stella and I was starting to worry for my ears! - never noticed how much tension there is in some of those tracks before. Amp has been powered up and processing signal for around 36 hours now and really starting to groove, it's all I can do to pull the phones off and go make coffee! So, the W1000 do not need an amp but will repay the investment in a good one. From another thread here, it appears that Graham thought the A900 as good or better than the HD250 and from checking the specs it appears very like there is not much difference between the A900 and the W1000 (soundwise I do not know - maybe someone else can comment) but if the sound is similar then the A900 could be an outstanding value, especially at this price cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190135234385&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009

Without a shadow of a doubt the Audio Technica, they'll blow your brains out if you want them to.

ATH-A900 arrived! This was a steal deal... Only £100,- straight from Japan all expenses inclusive! Fresh out off the box on the Green Solo.... These are fun cans... a lot of weight on the bass and drums compared to the HD600's, sound is massive and it's all there... Burn in started, I'll start a thread after 100 Hrs. Cheers, Dennis.

Be interested to hear what you think of them v the DR-150 which sounded sort of interesting to me (but not easy to find here)

Be interested to hear what you think of them v the DR-150 which sounded sort of interesting to me (but not easy to find here) DR150 vs ATH-A900... Two completely different kind of cans. My DR150's have had some 200 hrs. by now and they have improved quite a lot, fresh from the box they sounded a bit shrill, stiff, cold and lacking bass. Sound-stage is OK but nowhere near the HD600. Now they have opened up, they are highly revealing, upfront, but can cause some fatigue at times. Comfort is pretty good, price is a joke.. ATH-A900, have had 3 Cd's now... They have a more weighty overall sound and are more relaxed to listen too. I love the bass it has authority but is not boomy or muddy, mids and trebles reveal the details nicely without getting shrill or cold. Sound-stage is good for closed cans, I'd say pretty accurate. Comfort I find very good. I can understand why these are one of Graham's favorites. Cheers, Dennis

Wanted - ranking about - compared to AKG K701 / Senn HD600
Those are in my choice: AT A900 AT W1000 ATH-W5000 Sennheiser - HD 250-II Beyerdynamic - DT 250, 250 Ohm Ultrasone - PROline 750
My disadvantage - it gives no dealer(s) that I can hear all this - the other way to order all and send n-1 back is not mine ;D

I think I will go with the ATH-W1000 Fritz, I loved the W-100 when I had them but they were very hot on my ears so I sold them Seeing it'll soon be winter I will buy the W-1000 which can also double up as winter ear warmers..... W5000 looks lovely but a tad expensive
