Yesterday I had a longer listening session.
One CD - "Marianne Faithful - Blazing Away" track 5 "Sister Morphone"
I compared K701 with HD600 for a while.
The brass with K701 sounds more metallic, brazen - with HD600 it sounds a bit more "silky"
Whats more trueness, I cannot say - I don't stand behind the mic's on soundstage ;D

I compare the K701s to what I hear on stage during a performance. These cans make the instruments sound believable. I have heard nothing closer for getting the timbre right (including some expensive stax that had plenty of detail, but the wrong sound).

Yes Miguel, a work of art I don't know what the usual UK price is for these but there's a guy selling them for £169 at the moment which, for the UK, seems VERY reasonable to me. Come on........ tell me I've been done and could have got them for a quarter of the price

£169 is an excellent price Mike. Did that include postage? Best I've seen them at is £185 inc shipping.

I've been listening to the A900's more than the K701's lately I know you know Mike but those K701's sound really bad for the first few weeks. I do quite like the K701's but seem a lot more picky than other cans regarding the source etc

I do quite like the K701's but seem a lot more picky than other cans regarding the source etc If they are anything like the K-501 they will take a good year to fully bed in (no exaggeration) the AKG are always very tight to start with but once they loosen up they sound totally different, and different in a good way. Not sure if they are picky re: the source, they're probably better at revealing the shortcomings of the source? If you amp these guys properly they're different animals too..... I remember the WNA amps were CRAP at driving the K-501 and they sounded lifeless and bland.... plugged them into a few amps and much the same thing.... my favourite combo was a modded X-Can v2 running some Mullards there was a superb synergy going on with this pairing. Oh well.... they'll be on their way soon..... time will tell

Yes, a friend wanted to try mine with his set up and they sounded awful with his cdp, fitting my dac on the output and using that as a source instead made a world of difference Anyway let us know how you get on, nice cans if used in the right set up

They'll be fine Leo..... I'll hook them up to the old receiver in the workshop and blast the hell out of them for a week or so on a diet of 24/7 radio 2

My favourite dynamic cans.
The only cans I still own that I paid full price for and not regretting it for one second.
Be patient with them and don't let the 62ohm impedance fool you, they're among the more difficult to drive cans and yes, need a good source and lots of powerful amplification behind them.
They'll probably need more than a week of blasting. Another thing is that the pads need wearing in too, because they are stiff. If anything I think wearing in of the pads has more effect than burning in the drivers.

Very inefficient cans, just like the K-501, I think I have a few amps up my sleeve that'll get them motoring As I stated previously, if they're anything like the K-501 they'll need a good year before they really blossom. Agreed, all part of the bedding in process and as the pads soften the closer the driver get to your ears.... mentioned this when writing about the W1000 and, right enough, the more bed in the pads get the bassier they become If it made sense one would have thought the designers at AKG would have implemented dual entry cabling. I very much doubt a metal rod carries the signal? From what I can gather the signal goes through 6N (six nines) 99.9999% OFC (oxygen free cable) and not through a metal rod ;D Of course you will get guys recabling them and woodying them and all manners of weird and wonderful things to them but will it make them sound any better? How long is a piece of string? You know my take on aftermarket cables so I'll say no more on the subject. A good year.

Are we talking supreme Austrian comfort here? Jawohl mein Herr! Höchste Komfort!! I hung mine on the heater and compressed the cushions a bit. That elevated the deep bass a bit and now they are not just supreme but PERFECT!
