I took the earpads off my HD600s today, partly out of curiousity and partly because they're 4 years old and getting a bit dusty.
Rather interesting inside really. I was a bit concerned that some of the hair that had made its way past the foam lining had threaded itself through the fine mesh that covers the drivers, but I gently removed it and got rid of as much dust as I could without actually touching the mesh itself.
The most astounding discovery was a dead moth! The cheeky bugger had ensconced himself under the lip of the earpads. I have no idea how long he's been there. When I die, I want to be buried like that.

The most astounding discovery was a dead moth! The cheeky bugger had ensconced himself under the lip of the earpads. I have no idea how long he's been there. When I die, I want to be buried like that. Now you've got the earpads off here's what you do. Fill the sink with lukewarm water (well, warm) and dip the pads in until they're well saturated. Next get some shampoo and knead well into the pads until you have built up a good lather. Next, rinse the pads with plenty of clean cold water (as if you'd use dirty water to rinse them!) Now give them a knead again to squeeze out the excess moisture and then hang them outside (on a piece of string) until dry. I've done this to my HD-600 pads well over 30 times and they are as good as new. When dry you can run some sellotape over them to get rid of any hair and this also helps fluff them up a bit. Finish off giving a gentle brush with a toothbrush and your pads will be brand new looking once again. Amazing a moth found its way in there! Very cunning beasts your moth Those lint rollerts from Woolworths also bring them up nicely after you've washed them:

Thanks for that, Mike. I had been considering actually washing the pads, but feared them falling apart. I have found a website that purports to sell replacements for £3, rather than £30, but I haven't tested them on it yet. They can but refuse by law I suppose.
Now I know they'll survive I suppose I'll just have to take them off again and do things properly. I did sellotape them to get rid of some hair, and you're right, they do seem fluffier/thicker for it.
Any comments on the mod that's been bandied about involving replacing the foam sheet with something thinner to remove the "Sennheiser Veil" that everyone seems so concerned with?

Don't worry at all about washing them Stormy, they're indestructable and actually "benefit" from the occasional wash as it rinses out the salt from perspiration.
Yeh you can experiment with different grades of foam or even leave it out completely. The results are individual listener dependant so it's a suck it and see exercise. A friend of mine in Liverpool claims womens stockings sounded the best (7 denier) I must admit I havent tried them on my ears.

Hi,
At the moment I'm using the HD650's without the foam inserts. My pads are so worn that the silk mesh touches my ear when listening. I gave them a soak earlier today, hopefully they will fluff up a bit when dry. Stormy, I'd sure like the link to the website that's selling replacements for £3. The Senn prices are a bit steep, especially as I seem to prefer the sound with the worn pads. I remember buying some replacements for my HD600's and prefering the old pads best. It just might be what you are used to though. Stormy, just have a listen for a couple of days without the foam inserts & see which you prefer best.
