Mike, I comend you for striving to make things better w/ the Little Pinkie. Personally I am biased in favor of a plastic enclosure, although I wonder if a metal one would be better to reject RF noise. The idea of a fixed output lead also would eliminate a mechanical joint and one solder joint, but it forces you to put a longer lead to accomodate the various uses it could be put under. So in closing do what you think is best, we know you have the best sound as the outcome. Good luck. If I "were" to be contemplating an upgraded version of The Little Pinkie then it would have 1.2M of output lead as standard (other lengths to special order) and that 1.2M would be fixed.... yes, Miguel, you're right..... a few connections less, can only be good news for the consumer! Yup, you're also correct in assuming a metal enclosure will further help in reducing RFI / EMI, yet another component (the enclosure) that will subtly improve things (whether those things are audible is yet to be seen ) If I "were" to be thinking about an upgraded version then it would look something like this, I'd imagine............ The only difference being the IEC inlet and fixed output lead would be to the rear with on / off swich and blue LED being at the front.

Just an idea: why not make a Big Little Pinkie ? The Big version will have 4 transformers (instead of 1 with 4 secondaries like MF is making) with the possibility to conect 4 different MF X units ... Every transformer should be about 25 VA, which will increase the price but they are not soooo expencive ...

But is it glued.or screwed ?
|
|
|
Post by PinkFloyd on Nov 7, 2008 20:36:48 GMT
The glue is made from virgin gorila snoot, to assist in deepening of the bass and the widening of the soundstage. Incorrect, it's glued together with peruvian feather tailed mountain goat's jism for mellifluous mids and subterranean bass deployment...... gorilla snot is SO yesterday Miguel ;D

Recieved my Little Pinkie a few weeks ago and I must say that is has made a significant change soundwise. Especially the bass has improved a lot. It goes much deeper and is more up front which makes it easy to follow every note.
This is surely one of the best single upgrades at this price level . I can only recommend everyone to try this ,you won`t be disappointed !
I`m using the little Pinkie together with my X-CAN V3 modded with new caps and diodes and E88CC tubes and a pair of AKG 701 headphones. My source is a Copland CDA 289 cd player.

My first post here.
Ordered the Little Pinkie and the x-can V3 upgrade. I'm getting excited. Yesterday purchased Musical Fidelity's new DAC, the V-DAC, plugged it into my Macbook Pro (running WinAmp in Vista Bootcamp config) to optical out to the x-can v3 unmodded with stock JAN tubes. What an improvement already on my Sony CD3000 headphones.
Now I salivate waiting for the psu and mods to bring it full circle.
Notice that Musical Fidelity is soon releasing a power mod for the V series equipment. Notice Also that PinkFloyd is considering a new psu. Would be nice if it would work on the new V-DAC and other V-series as well as the x-series, as the stock power supply adequacy is already being questioned on the head-fi boards.
Have enjoyed the forum. Everyone keep up the insightful comments.

I have the little Pinkie V3i for a while now, I have a XCan V8, and never thought much about it to be honest, I had a lot of other stuff on my mind at the time it arrived, but today someone asked me how I liked the diffence and I realized I couldn´t tell !!
So I looked up the old wall mart power supply and it scared the crap out of me. Where is that bloody noise commin from and where is the detail I so love about the Grado GS1K..
So thank a whole lot for this excellent upgrade. I now realize I can´t do without.
Cheers.

Can't say enough about the improvement of the x-can v3 with the Little Pinkie. Been using it about 2 weeks now and listening on the x-can V3 with mods provided by PinkFloyd. Right now listening thru Denon D7000's to Babatunde Olatunji, spdif thru foobar to v-dac onward to the x-can (on macbookpro w/bootcamped into vista.)
I am a new man with the enhancements. Overwhelmed would be an understatement. I can not gush enough.

Hi everybody. I just receive this morning my Little Pinkie V3 and I confirm what everybody said before me, more precise sound, better stereo separation, more definition in bass and more silent background. I was thinking that it was done for replacing my "wall wart" transformer by the X PSU v3, until I discover the Rock Grotto's forum. Compared to the price of the X PSU v3 in his time, about 399$ US, the Little Pinkie V3i is a bargain at 195$ CAN delivered at my door. Thanks to Mike for his good and honest work. I talk about this product on the Québec Audio Forum www.quebecaudio.com/forums/index.php?act=idxI am sure that you can read in french! ;D

I talk about this product on the Québec Audio Forum www.quebecaudio.com/forums/index.php?act=idxI am sure that you can read in french! ;D Hi ymd.... glad you like the Pinkie! Unfortunately I cannot read French but have translated what you have written through "google translator": "Hello to all. A little information can be useful to owners of a headphone amplifier Musical Fidelity X-CAN v3. I have one personally and I like that I loved the performance improved by replacing the external power which is a small wall transformer (wall wart) by an external power supply dedicated X PSU v3. But as we know, Musical Fidellity likes to change his models quickly enough so that the v3 series is discontinued and is no longer possible to obtain the "power supply" X PSU v3. Obviously the new X-PSU v8 is still more expensive and is not designed for the old X CAN v3. In my research on the internet I came across this site DIY www.rock-grotto.co.uk/pinkiepsu.htm where members' trippent "on the headphones and listen to modify or if you prefer" tweequent "the helmet amplficateurs Musical Fideltity for improvement. They have kits for improving X CAN v2 and v3 as well as external power hand-made and meets the sweet name of "Little Pinkie V3i PSU. This external power is not a gimmick and is well worth its price is about $ 195.00 CAN once delivered to your door. Compared to X-PSU v3 easily worth U.S. $ 399.00 is a bargain and believe me, the sound of my X-CAN v3 is thus improved significantly. Compared to the small wall transformer, I get a sound more transparent, more dynamic, better defined bass and better stereo separation. The "Little Pinkie V3i" has a switch that I do not have to unplug the X-CAN v3 of the wall or the back every time I turn it off. Its XLR plug for the device is a Neutrik metal cast rather than taking vulgar chrome steel and plastic. Compared to the small wall transformer to 24 volts total to 16 watts and 0.5 amps, we go to a dual mono power supply of 12 volts per channel at 30 watts in 2.5 amperes. This diet has totally eliminated the noise "hum" often found in my listening with headphones, late at night. So for the owners of X-CAN v3 and even X-CAN v2, all is not lost and we can give a second life even if Musical Fidelity has left us stranded with their products quickly discontinued."

The waiting time for my Pinkie just gets worse and worse...... Hopefully the postman will have it tomorrow...

Ahhhh finally the wait is over, the most notisable difference, was the blackness of the amp, it was silent when it was supposed to be silent....
I only gave it a ten minutes run before I swapped tube for those gems that Mike has in his store.
I will report more in a couple of days, as the tubes and pinkie probally needs some working time to get setteled, now I will go listen to some music..

I was supposed to gt it yesterday but the Post Office left a note saying I had to pick it up.
I don't really believe in burn in, but I'll humor it and give it a try.

I have had the Pinkie for about 3 weeks now and would endorse all the praise that has been given for the product. My only gripe is that I keep having to stop it humming by either sqeezing oe pressing the casing.I tried tightening the casing screw which temporarily stopped the problem but it has returned once more. I appreciate that there is little room for movement inside the case but wonder whether this is due to heat expansion causing the internals to resonate against the casing. Anyone else experience this?
