Hello, I have heared it said that one should switch off the cd display when listening to your Xcans, if you want the best sound. I tried that last night and yes it seemed to me it was improoved slightly, but i wanted to be certain it was not my imagination so i put my cd player on a section of music and used ab repeat to listen to the same bit of music over and over again i then closed my eyes and pressed the cd display on my remote a few times so i would not know if the display was on or off so i had to guess if it sounded better or worse and everytime i guessed and opened my eyes i was wrong , it would be interesting if other people tried this because it seems like a placebo to me.

garycake Quite a few CD/DVD players provide this facility. I presume that the rationale behind the idea , is that most displays are "multiplexed" i.e. individual numerical segments are sequentially switched on and off at a high frequency to reduce power dissipation and assist with long life. Turning off this high frequency switching, or even dimming the displays, MAY assist with a reduction in overall noise level due to this switching. SandyK

I've been trying to hear a difference for years but still can't. I'm sure there's a lot to be said for "display off" but unfortunately I am not a bat and can't hear the audible improvements they claim.

I agree with Mike - I have tried most tweeks available to improve the sound quality (much to the dismay of my wife), some of which seem to work. However, turning the cd display off makes no difference at to my ears. I would suggest concentrating on the power supply as this in my opinion makes the biggest difference. Cheers

I think it does with my 63KI which has a dimmer, but perhaps not with higher end or modded players. A higher end PSU and low jitter clock will help with a player cope with more crap.

A higher quality PSU, or extra voltage regulators ,makes a worthwhile improvement with the majority of players. A separate voltage regulator for the clock area of the circuit can also help reduce jitter. SandyK

I'm a nutter & have tried all kinds of cd tweaks but I have to agree with Mike & Robert as well. Still leave it off though, just in case. ;-)

Another reason for the dimmer, is that many people find a bright fluoro display distracting

Instead of paying through the nose for a product like ERS paper, why not use sound deadening material, adhesive felt etc on the chassis, and inside the cover etc. of the component itself ? You will almost certainly get similar results at a small fraction of the cost. SandyK

My Denon DVD2900 has a 'switch off' display and I am sure I can hear an improvemnt when I do turn it off. One of my sons is into good sound but he is unfussy about minor tweeks... but he said the difference is obvious. So I am probably not imagining the improvement. When playing CD's with the 2900 you can switch off the display as well switching off all the video circuitry too making the machine purely CD; if you don't need the co-ax digi out socket, you can mute that too.
I usually use my 2900 linked via co-ax to my X-DACv3. When used in this way, with the display on or off, it makes no difference.
