Mike just repaired my X-CAN V3 - he replaced a bunch of caps, and ISTR a couple of the VA series were used ... or maybe not - I'll need to open up again to remember which!
I was talking with Mike last night ... I'm very happy with changes he's made - in addtion to that which would be in the normal kit he's swopped out a couple of other bits that had become faulty.
Mike - BTW, after chatting with you ... I didn't hit the sack, I ended up having a quick listen, which turned into a 1.5 hour session! Improvement over last config with the Senns, undecided with the Grados. ISTR we set her up for the Gardos last time!
Senn 1 = Senn 650 listen to X-Can V3 on last set up - Mikes mod kit self installed (ISTR the output caps were tailored for grados)
Senn 2 = Senn 650 listen to X-Can V3 on Mikes installed mods following repair. Includes some bypass caps, no input caps, and some other swop outs inlcuding a couple of VA series I think?
Grado 1 & 2 as above with Grado 325i
General impression with the Senn 2 is that they perform better on detail than the Grados 1 did before .. there is an etch that's characteristic with the Grado1 (less with Grado2), and is just not present with Senn2. Senn 1 always sounded "veiled" - ahem to coin a phrase!
Gardo 2 has same detail in the mids, but seems to have lost something higher up compared to Grado 1 but that may be a perception based on a reduced etch in Grado 2 - Either way Gardo 2 is easier to listen to .
Prefernce right now ..
1st Senn 2
2nd Gardo 2
3rd Gardo 1
4th Senn 1
Which is just aswell a I cannot go back to config 1!
There's a slight hum in the background .. suspect this is caused by removing inpout caps ... so we'll try that.
Senn 2 extension is good top and bottom with top being a tad sweeter than Grado 2 though on extension it's hard to say. Eitehr way I don't feel the Senn 2 config is missing top end. Actually the height of the image is substantially improved in Senn 2.
Bass is slightly better in Senn 2 than Grado 2, but Senn 1 used to feel deeper, but I suspect that the "Chocolate" of the amp was just adding weight to the Bass in Senn 1
Mike may be able to comment on whether he used the VAs or not!
