Mike - A couple of xcan questions - I might as well order a couple of extra parts for the xcan together with the XR100 amp components. Three Questions that I need answered please - that I have noticed from your work in progress posts. 1. I have never bothered changing the stock pot on my xcan. I see from prev older posts that you recommended changing to the 10K alps carbon dual pot RS549-9159. What about the 50K Alps from RS no RS249-9165 ? Isnt the original one a 50K ? What would be the best one from RS ? 2. Regarding the removal of the input caps (c102 & c202) I take it I use a zero ohm carbon film resistor. Please advise how I check the CD player output and at what level is acceptable in order to safely run the amp without these caps. 3. What did you use for your DIY valve dampers and tell me about the felt on the top of the caps that I have noticed- presume its a type of felt glued there ? thanks these are a few questions that I have been wondering about ! I might as well order the pot etc with my RS order ( I already asked for the 10K pot but can change the order before dispatch)

marc If not too expensive you could order both . Sometimes a 10K pot can improve the treble. They are often used to help improve S/N a little, too. Another one won't go astray anyway. Handy to have. I will leave the final word to the maestro. SandyK

Theoretically 10K will be less noisy than 50K but in practice I can't hear a lot of difference! I generally send out the 50K ones to people, good little pots Carbon zero ohm links will do fine when you remove the input caps but offcuts from component legs will do fine. If you suffer from RF in your area then you could always fit axial ferrite beads instead see hereAs to DC offset I've written a bit here about it... www.rock-grotto.co.uk/dcoffset.htmValve dampers are simply washers available from any good ironmongers..... take a valve in to the shop and get a few assorted washers that are a "tight" fit on the valve and that's you sorted Felt dampers are just felt pads you can pick up in any good ironmongers, I'm not sure of their effectiveness but worth giving them a try, blu tack is good in this position also

Of course you can.... probe between signal and ground.
