Do all those out there with a x canv2 find the sound better with an additional preamp?

Since no one else has had a stab at this. I personally don't think so. The CD player I use eliminates the need for a preamp, which is one of the reasons I chose it. Is the preamp solid sate or tube? At the very least a preamp is the most noise inducing component in the audio food chain. I drive my V Cans direct from my CD player. This ensures the shortest possible audio path, & minimises the degradation of the sound.
I would consider a preamp may be useful in a system as a tone & soundstage control , & other obvious reasons. You may find tube rolling would do the same thing without the need for an additional preamp, until you find the sound flavour you like.
I use a tube preamp with my SET amp & horns, which in the future will be hooked up to my TV/DVD player. I'll do some tube rolling with the preamp to find the best sound synergy.

Aurum Are your VAF speakers the DCX ? I had a listen to a pair of DCX recently, and they sound really good with the right amplifier. I must say the bottom end is something else again - Awesome ! SandyK

Just wondered as I find it better with a pre amp. More substance, soundstage, layering to the music. This is especially true with better cds that are less compressed. It may be the tubes in the xcan I will need to roll some to find out. My pre amp is ss but a one off highly modded with external psu.

largespeakers IMHO, you just answered your own question. If you are going to use a ss amplifier for the benefits you described, particularly layering of the music (yes, I get that too) you should be partnering it with a ss Headphone amplifier of similar quality. Why don't you wait and see what Graham Slee has up his sleeve ? I know most people in this forum love their "glowing bottles" for their warm euphonic sound, but I honestly don't believe that anything but the highest quality valve amplifier can come near the soundstage of a high quality SS design , mainly due to their lower S/N and much lower achievable distortion levels. This low level ambience that you are referring to, is often masked to some extent by the poorer S/N and higher even order distortion products of MOST valve designs. Not necessarily those owned by many savvy forum members. THERE, I HAVE GONE AND SAID IT, SO EXCOMMUNICATE ME FROM THIS FORUM FOR HERESY ! Alex

I have also heard the DCX speakers & liked them a lot. Mine are the I-66 Signature series. If you like the DCX, then the I-66's will blow you away. I had them done in Metallic Piano Black.

I would love to get a pair of the Signatures, but the cat would soon make them look like my old ones. You didn't bite about my recent reply! I am expecting a lot of flack when Europe comes out of the darkness.

What is there to bite about? any good tubeaholic know that valves piss all over SS. I'd put that cat into a box shaped like a speaker if it tried to use my Signatures as a scratching post
