Okay, so I've been lusting after a headphone amplifier for my hd-650s (my motherboard is no longer cutting it, rather, it never really did). I've settled on either a fully modded x-can v2 or a vanilla v3. I can't seem to find a modded v3 for sale. So my question for you: which will sound better? Or should I just go for the v3 and [pay someone to] have it modded? Anyone know how much it would cost me to have a v3 fully modded a la PinkFloyd? I'm worthless with a soldering iron.
My source will be flac/ogg/mp3/etc. -> [eventual outboard dac]. When I eventually move back to the US I'll also have my turntable and associated toys again. I listen mostly to rock (often folky, laid-back sorts, eg Kings of Convenience, Bonnie Prince Billy, Wilco, Sufjan Stevens, etc.) and modern classical (Xenakis, Reich, Glass, Rzewski, etc.). Oh and I also use my headphones for watching TV and films.
Thanks for your input!

I've done a lot of ab type test with both(modded and unmodded) and I find the v3 to have a better soundstage with a overall sound that favors the top end. I find the v2 to have a slightly fatter sound with a touch more rolled off on the top. The v2 seems to have a bass bloom while the v3 has a tighter more highend bass. this is all IMO!!
If I was using a very good source, the v3 would be it! If I well using a low grade source ie my Ipod, I'd get a v2.
GoodLuck.

Bennyboy Your comments are spot on ! The V3 is a much more sophisticated DA, as you would hope from a newer model. SandyK

I agree, and will ad that the V2 is a more fun amp to listen to. The V3 at times is to analitycal/cold compared with the V2. Plus the V2 is nicer to look at. I totally agree with every word of that so the score is 2 - 2 at the moment V2 is luverly looking

Mike How does the V3 compare with a typical modded V2, after your "full house"mods with the Russian military spec matched valves etc ? MP3 will still sound crap with either HA , but vinyl and DAC was mentioned for future use. Both units appear to have excellent ,and very close specs. on paper, so it might come down to price and availability ? I'm out of my depth with these 2 HA's, so I will leave further discussion to the 2 experts. SandyK

I totally agree with every word of that so the score is 2 - 2 at the moment V2 is luverly looking To tell the truth, I don't think either of the two amps is particularly pretty, but that's okay. The v2 definitely looks much better with a replacement volume knob and a blue LED! Both here and on head-fi the vote is incredibly close. I suppose that means that I'll probably be happy with either purchase. A supplemental question: many have said that the v3 is "analytical." Do the v3 PinkFloyd mods do anything to bring more of the "liveliness" or "punch" ascribed to the v2 to the v3? There was a fully modded v2 listed on ebay, but unfortunately my bid was too low. So now I'm thinking about buying the much more prevalent v3 and having it modded down the line. Thanks for everyone's input, by the way!
