some voltage questions on xcan and X-10d

hello everybody,

i have posted a few times already here. i'm upgrading a MF x-10d (not the latest version, the round ones) and a brand new x-can v3. The guy asked me also to look at his XL-P

now a few questions

1)in the X-can v3 there are 4 100uf/50v caps, in the upgrade kit those are only 35v. is that because the manufactor could not get 35v at this place. Or is there something else going on ?

2)both X-10d and x-can v3 uses 10uf non polar cap. i wanna use the one grotto adviced. I have discussed this (not only me) to use black gates,but the guy for whom i'm doing this sometimes don't touch his hifi for a week. so black gates have to be run daily. anyway i'm gonna start of with the cheap non brand. the problem is that i can only find the capxon and not the cd71 in rscomponents, i don't think this is a problem to use the same in both ?

3)i have looked around for bypassing. everywhere i read that mkv are the best. but the values are quite big, and they aren't super cheap either. i need somthing like 220-390pf. for bypassing the (what used to be the red drops, after changing: the blue squares). at this moment i'm thinking of ruderstein. i could also get wina mks and more. still i'm stuck in the dark.

4)the XL-P is really a nightmare to got your hands on. my question is: does anyone has an upgrade done, and most of all is it worth it ? i can change all the caps, and drops, and diodes, but what with the opamps ? maybe it is better to sell it and make a complete new phono tube stage. what would he get for an old xl-p ?

5)the non polar input caps on the x-can v3: what voltage do they have to be, i think anything more than 6.3v is overkill ?
on the x-10d they have to be 50 volt i think.

6)how did you make you diy tube dampers ?

What upgrade kit is this? The upgrade kits I do all have 63V / 100uF never 35V / 100uF.

The CapXon are actually very good non polars and specifically designed for audio usage too, 105C temp rated into the bargain! If there's no DC at your source output then you can dispense with the 10uF input caps altogether in the X-CAN v3, just jumper over the pads with a zero ohm link.

The red drops? You are referring to the 0.47uF polyesters, yes? So, I assume you've replaced them with 0.47uF polypropylenes now? (the blue squares ;D) Question is, why do you want to bypass the 0.47uF polypropylenes, is there a particular reason?

All I've done is recap one of them. The guy who owned it claimed it made a major improvement, I can't say as I didn't listen to it.

I generally use 63V / 10uF simply because it's pretty well known that higher voltage caps (bigger package) tend to sound better so you could also go with 100V / 10uF here. 6.3V will be fine, especially if you're using a boutique cap they tend to come in bigger packages so space would be your enemy if you went for high voltage boutique types.

6)how did you make you diy tube dampers ?

Washers. Get yourself over to your local ironmonger, take one of your valves along with you and get a few assorted rubber washers that are a tight fit... will cost you pennies and is very effective.

oh okee, i had red on your site, that you changed the 2200-1000-100uf by panasonics 35volt. so i thought that in the kit there would be 35 volt 100uf.

i will buy the capxon; since i don't know wheter there is dc on the input i'm gonne leave them there, one day when the guy has stopped buying hifi i will measure the dc. but for now i'm gonna play safe, since it isn't mine

well i thought of bypassing them with 220pf or something. i know it is controversial, so i would install them and see what it does, and then remove them after a half year, or so.

okee i will recap the xl-p. do you have a list of the caps ? i have written them down. this is what i found: i start from the front and just write down everything i came across

No. 1000uF is 1000uF whether it's 6.3V or 630V rated.

No. 1000uF is 1000uF whether it's 6.3V or 630V rated.

i mean when 1000uf 630v is charched by 6 volt will lead to less capacitance, but probably not significantly

I use the 50v because the FM's dont come in 63v. If you run the 63v types you'll be using FC caps. If I wanted to make it easy, I'd use 63v in everything and get a better volume price. I like to use the FM's wherever I can. I think Panasonic claims the FM's are twice as good as the FC's.

aha, indeed, i just looked at the order page, and they noticed that i must buy more then a few of them, so i'm gonna use the highest needed voltage. i will try to get the fm's

i'm not shure whether the specs of the xl-p are completely correct. and i didn't get a glimps of the values of the orange drops.

hello, i have searched on the diyaudio. that was the first thing i did, but no trace of it, a lot of other MF schemes but no xlp. at least after some searching.

I'm pretty sure I have a copy so remind me tomorrow some time and i will grab a virtual shovel and try to dig it up from my the overloaded mess of my hard drive.

In there somewhere but so is every other damn audio schematic of interest or that I may need to do repair work and those from the thirties to the present so a real bitch some times even though using a file system that was meant to avoid such things
