hi, i moved back home from uni today. obviously couldnt go a whole month without me so the xcans came with me on the 9 hour journey (british pupblic transport huh?) anyway back on to topic when i got home i realised the left channel has got a lot of distortion on it. sounds a bi like when you leave a source playing through a poweram when its power down. but not quite as bad, is on left channel only. please tell me this is the tubes? although they wernt cheap i can replace them easily. although did leave spare valves at uni, guess thats called sods law

Please tell me this is the tubes? The valves, yes, probably the VALVES. Open her up (5 screws in all, easy) and check that one, or both, of the VALVES hasn't come loose from the socket (doubtful) if both VALVES are sound as a pound in their sockets then have another listen. If the problem persists and is only coming from one channel then swap the VALVES over........ if the problem is still coming from the same channel it's not the valves.......... If it is coming from the other channel change the valves.

hi, have tried moving the valves around and the problem sticks on the same channel , so i guess the problem isnt the valves. any further ideas, have tried tweaking everything, nothings seems loose. also looked to see if anything looked scorched etc. no luck. the problem is only really noticeable at fairly high volume, where the sound becomes fairly distorted on the right channel. any ideas? cheers, mark

Before we start even suspecting the amp is at fault all the other components in the path have to be known to be working. That includes your headphones and your source. So swap over your interconnects first....... problem still on the same channel or not? Next, never assume your headphones are 100% either, if you've got another pair have you tried them? you get the idea.... do the interconnect swap over first (ie plug in the left output from your source to the right input of the amp and plug the right output from your source into the left input of your amp) see what happens.

hiya, you speak good sense but i have already tried all of the above. have swapped interconnects and problem stays on same channel. have tried the same headphones with two different sources and they seem fine. the only thing that does spring to mind is that i sarrted using a new 3.55mm to 1/4 inch jack cnverter the other day is it possible that this is docking ok with other components but not with x-can? cant find another to test this hypothesis yet though

good news :-) have taken the amp back to uni, and it now seems to be working fine :-) am hoping that t doesnt prove to be an intermeittent problem, anyway in the process of trying to sort out the problem i brought some new tubes, time to let them burn in a bit thanks for all the advice people

hi, bad news seems like the problem back, again is only at higher volumes, and on one channel but definate distortion, cant work out whats causing it. pink would you be willing to take a look? how much would this cost? is it doable on a student budget do u think? cheers, mark

If you can send me your X-CANS (it's an X-CANS V1 right?) I'll repair it free of charge (obviously you'll be responsible for shipping charges both ways) I'm looking for a guinea pig amp to try the Samwha VA series 130C capacitors out in..... see here: rockgrotto.proboards39.com/index.cgi?board=m&action=display&thread=1172003105&page=1 and your amp will fit the bill nicely I'll fully mod your X-CANS while I'm at it so, in answer to your question...... it's very doable on a student budget and a one off. I've got an idea what's causing the distorted sound and have the transistors in stock. So, send me a PM and we can get the ball rolling All the best. Mike.
