I recently had pinkfloyd do the caps + heatsinks mod on my v3 and thought I'd post my first impressions after about 12 hours listening...
After recieving the unit back, I let it warm up for half an hour before slipping in a few CD's I know well, including Joni Mitchell's Blue, an excellent DVD-A disk of Bach's St. Matthew passion, Mozart's Requiem, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Nike Drake's Pink Moon.
Even with my old Senn. HD-25SP's, it was immediately apparent that the resoution and soundstage had improved, as had the bass. The midrange and especially vocals are stunningly clear and lifelike. The classical pieces also had an improved soundstage and were beutifully musical.
All this was made even more appearent switching to my new HD-650's, which are better than the HD25sp's in every respect. I can happily listen for hours on end with no fatigue at all. Even at low volumes the clarity is stunning, while still being hugely musical...not at all harsh or analytical.
So impressions so far are that this was a very worthwhile upgrade that I'd strongly recommend all x-can owners to undertake. The only downside is the lack of use my expensive amp + speakers! I'll update this with some further impressions after some further burn-in and again when my NOS 6H23N-EBs arrive.
Finally, thanks to pinkfloyd for providing a speedy professional service at a very reasonable cost. He also diagnosed and fixed a dodgy joint on the headsocket that was causing the right channel to cut out. Top man.
