If you didn't have an X-PSU I would say get a Pinkie but, seeing as you have the X-PSU, I would keep the X-PSU. I would always replace the valves with a fresh pair (dependant on how long they've been in service) at the same time as doing the mods.... you'll be surprised at the huge improvement a new pair can make over a pair that have become tired. Glad everything went well

cheers Mike not sure if it is a case of "beer ears", but it sounds even better tonight. as for the valves, how do you tell if they need changing? bought this and the v2 from different sellers on ebay , both stated valves had been upgraded during their ownership. they look spotless, even the pins. having said this, i guess they would make a good spare set, at least? V2 cap/diode set is next on my list (plus pot and HP socket). my birthday next monday, so expect the order then

A valve that has been in the same piece of equipment for years "will" look new..... Give that valve an emmisions test and you may be shocked to find it is absolutely knackered. Just because it glows doesn't mean it goes..... it will still make music but not music as we know it Jim Send them to me (the valves) and I'll give them a free health check.... no probs at all Mike.

sounds like a good idea. out of curiosity, what is the best expected lifespan of valves?

the valves in my x10-d are 6h23n-eb. have sent message to the seller to see if he can remember when he purchased them.

sounds like a good idea. out of curiosity, what is the best expected lifespan of valves? There's no real guideline as to the "in spec" lifespan of a valve.... the 6N23P-EB is quoted @ 5000hrs.... theoretically it will stay in spec for 5000hrs which is 208 days of constant use. After that period the valve will start to drift out of spec..... it will still "glow", it will still work but will not be within it's original specification. A lot of people say a valve is like a light bulb, it either works or it doesn't.... incorrect! It will continue glowing EVEN if it's totally knackered... This idea that leaving a valve powered up 24/7/365 is also BULLSHIT! Again, they use the light bulb as a reference point and have you believe that a valve is the same as a light bulb and has more chance of "blowing" if you turn it on and off..... they recommend you leave the valve powered up all the time and this will increase the lifespan. Nonsense....... the more hours you put on a valve the sooner it will go out of spec.... so, using that as a rule of thumb, an X-10D that has been left powered up for a year would probably benefit from a fresh "in spec" pair of valves..... an X-10D that was powered up for 10 hours per week, with 6N23P-EB on board, would "theoretically" expect those valves to stay in spec for 10 x 52 = 1 year (520) so, 5,000 / 520 = 9.61 years. 30 hours of use per week would equate to 30 x 52 = 1560 hrs so 5,000 / 1560 = 3.2 years 50 hours of use per week would equate to 50 x 52 = 2600 so 5,000 / = 1.92 years..... So on and so forth...... That's the theory anyway. One thing is for SURE.... this "always on" nonsense with valves is a misconception...... the clock is ticking, the more they are left on the sooner they go out of spec..... I have NEVER seen a valve go "bang" like a light bulb, these people who tell you they either work or don't are talking out of their arseholes..... leaving your equipment on all the time is NOT protecting your valve, it is actually knackering it QUICKLY Have you ever seen / heard the equipment from these "always on" diehards?...... usually sounds like shite, scorched PCB's, bulging caps, knackered valves...... I've serviced quite a few "always on" amps and they are all the same..... knackered! When the owner gets them back (with new parts) they call me a "genius".... it's a "revelation"..... erm, yeh "ok" I am a genius ( self appreciation society ) BUT FFS!...... people have got to stop believing this "MYTH" that "always on" is a good thing..... it's the worst possible thing that you can do UNLESS you want to wear your equipment out prematurely.

Has anyone tried these
ebay copies of the X10D? At a glance the layout looks faithful to the original, maybe a good source for RG or even Pinkie specials, a wave of the magic electric wand, pop inside a basic case and voila! The "Quicksilver" from the Pinkie Laboratories?

I've tried to order the X-10D "Extra" Upgrade Kit a few times through the website and email, but I get no answer. Does anybody know how to get it?
