Mike I'm going to have to press you on a pecking order for these v1's/v2's/v3's,modded and stock................ You seam quite excited by these early examples.............is it the sound or just that it's got lots of bits to change !!
I noticed a definite difference between my (mildly) modded v1 and a stock v2 (RIP).However I can't help thinking that most V1's will be still going strong long after the v2's and v3's have burnt themselves to death.

Doesn't take too long to do Rick, I'm fast with the soldering iron, I sleep "sometimes" between soldering sessions but as soon as I wake up I'm busy with the iron again. So keen am I that I fire up the gas iron the minute I awake and start soldering before I'm even dressed..... if I ever go out anywhere (rare) then I solder on gas when I'm driving. No seriously, soldering is like eating to me...... comes naturally Here's a few pics of the completed article:

Nice LED.Is that blue or "Rapid pink" ?
C'mon Mike I'll need the full blurb write-up on the V1....................I've just bought one.Me thinks there is more tweakability in the V1 (and they're cheaper)............and they are less likely to burn themselves to death !...................

Nice LED.Is that blue or "Rapid pink" ? Neither Roberto, it's "purple" but really doesn't show how nice it looks in the photo. Oh yes, they're highly tweakable Roberto! Let's just say, at the moment, I'm listening to it with OPA2107.. next to roll in are AD823, OPA627 (B-Dog), OPA2227, OPA2228, AD825 (B-Dog), OPA2134, OPA2132, LM6172 and OPA2604. I haven't rolled dual chips for almost a year and this is proving to be great fun! The 2107 is nicer sounding than the stock NE5532 for sure (less tubby on the bottom end, more air) very listenable chip being somewhere in between a OPA627 and AD-8610 in flavour but still with that warm TI house sound underpinning the proceedings..... not overly warm though and a definite 7.5 / 10 for sheer low down listenability and musicality. I have high hopes for the AD823 and will report back when I've rolled her in. I also think the OPA2227 will be very suited to this particular application as will both the AD825 and OPA627 on B-Dogs. LM6172 is a bit of a wild card and a gamble but if she is implemented well and doesn't oscillate can be one of the most exciting rolls to listen to.. fingers crossed she'll roll without complaining! If you're going to mod your V1 then first thing to do is solder in some good quality turned pin Dil8 sockets in order that you can [glow=red,2,300]power roll [/glow]without having to use the desolder braid each time. Give each opamp a good few hours to stabilise before taking notes / evaluating and always use the same pair of valves (preferably a newish pair) when evaluating your rolls....... the differences between opamps can be just as noticeable as the differences between valves, get the combo right and you'll have an eargasm. Be warned! [glow=red,2,300]Power rolling [/glow]is EXTREMELY addictive and unless you're careful you'll end up as obsessed and sad as me! [glow=red,2,300]Power Roll[/glow] number one: OPA2107

tubby...........exactly the sound i remember of my old v1
I still have a few 8 pin DIP sockest and they will be the first to go in ! Along with new Alps 10k log pot. I have a small stash of 1000/1200/1500uF,35V FM's and FC's that await the top board as well.
Did I say "rapid pink" ? I meant "rapid purple" ! My blue LED's are starting to look so last century !

tubby...........exactly the sound i remember of my old v1 Thank god I'm not losing my touch with my "tubby" reference ;D Yeh she did sound a tad on the tubby side with 5532 on board, the 2107 has cleaned / tightened the proceedings up but I'm sure an injection of one of the more raw / organic sounding AD chips will REALLY get this puppy singing. Opamp flavours can suit your listening mood and it's a pity you can't install them all and flick a switch when you fancy a "warmer" sound or a more "organic" sound. I rolled in MANY chips and studied their sonic characteristics when I spent two years farting about with the WNA (amongst other amps) and one thing I have learnt is you will "NEVER" be satisfied with one lone chip...... as long as there's choice out there you'll find yourself constantly rolling. There is not one chip that does everything well, they are all compromised IMO and you really have to factor this into your way of thinking before rolling otherwise it'll drive you to insanity trying to find the perfect one... doesn't exist but a few come very close. If you're looking for warm and chocolaty you generally want to steer toward the Burr Brown house sound, if you're after a bit more grain and rawness then you may well find the AD house sound fits your requirements better. A good all round starting point in the V1 has got to be the OPA2134. Have a good listen to it and decide where you want to go from there, I can help you when it comes to opamps as I can honestly say I've listened to erm..... quite a few ;D Soldamop is your friend when removing the pot Roberto, suck the solder from the pads one at a time and the pot will just drop out.. don't keep the iron on for longer than you have to, as soon as the mop fills with solder whip it off otherwise you'll possibly end up lifting a pad or two. The only heat on the V1 comes from the two 15V regulators, no need to heatsink. The two BD139 transistors are pretty cool running so, again, no need to heatsink them. If you want to try a really super sounding cheap valve then PM me. I won't mention it here cause the last time I recommended a valve the seller put the price up from £4.99 to £30 so.. sod that! I'm not sure Rapid do the purple 5mm?

Mike All good stuff as usual. For the LED I was refering to at Rapid, try 55-1822.They describe it as "5mm Pink".
The op-amp rolling option was one of the appeals with the V1 along with less heat generated, loads of caps to swap out and...............they are cheaper than the V2!
The seller of "my" V1 has an extra set of valves ( I also have a spare set for my V2), so there's a bit of fun to be had with rolling the valves as well.

Just made up a couple of the "Rapid Pink" leds to go into X-cans etc.................... well, they are very errrrrrrrr. pink. Not sure what i expected actually. But pink they are. Mike, these would be ideal for your modified X-10D's etc particularly if you wish to attract the gay end of the market
