Hello All, I recently did the mods to my X-10 v3 and it certainly made one heck of an improvement. For just a few hours worth of careful soldering it was certainly well worth it. I already have, what some people might describe as a mid-high end system with a MF A1001 amp, Pink Triangle Anniversary turntable plus Bluenote Bellaria and Dynavector XX-2, MF A308CD with B&W CD1SE speakers. Even before the X-10 v3 I was happy with the sound, post X-10v3 happier and now post up-grade happier still again. Having done the up-grade it was obvious that there was a new layer of music being presented. I would say the sound is smoother and less forced allowing the music to flow more easily, like it has time to breathe, more nuanced. The whole frequency range seems better integrated, with better bass definition, smoother treble; both of which appear to seamlessly 'merge' with the midrange, which is smooth and articulate. The singer/s are placed centrally, with the musicians surrounding them. An better out of the box presentation. People might find their music sounds louder, but I put this down to less grunge getting in the way. Overall I'm very pleased and certainly worth the price and time. I did have one problem with one of my power transistors. One of them sent clicks and pops through the speaker when I tapped it. I desoldered it and on closer inspection the soldering point had actually become detached. However, carefully scrapping away some of the laquer on the track and some careful soldering I was able to made a good connection. Not sure if this was just an unfortunate incident or something to do with the heating problems mentioned in another thread. Oscar

Hi Oscar, welcome to the forum! Glad you found it worthwhile, did you fit the bypass caps or just go with the 470uF non polars on their own? How many hours on her since the upgrade Oscar? You'll find it will open out even more over a period of time (usually after 50 - 100 hours) Sonds superb immediately but does get even better after a while Nice description of the sound. Good move. I tend to do this with the transistor tracks as a matter of course. Carefully scrape back the green (with a craft knife or other sharp tool) to the copper track and reinforce with solder, it not only ensures the pads won't lift from the board so easily the additional solder reinforcement also helps dissipate the heat. I'm happy you're happy with sound Oscar and good that the transistor is now firing on all four cylinders! All the best. Mike.

Hello Mike,
I did fit the by pass caps so I don't have a before or after vedict about them, but I figured why not anyway. The system has not had too many hours of music yet, maybe about 20(ish) I guess. All the same I can hear improvements in the sound.
I used to find the top on CD music a little bit 'stingy' sometimes but over time got used to it...or maybe my hearing has been affected. Anyway, with the mods the whole system initially sounded a bit 'dull' or 'flat' until I sat down for a good few hours and realised that top end had become much smoother and less 'exposed'
I usually take such things with a heavy dose of sugar, being the slight skeptic, 'snake-oil' and all that, and having spent years getting to this point with my system (I've had the Anniversary since it was new, well over ten years now, hugely upset they went under, but hugely happy they are now back again as the Funk Firm).
It makes me wonder what would happen if I re-capped the 308CD player and A1001 amp which also both use Jamicons.
Many thanks
Oscar

I have now changed the shitty jamicon caps on all my MF gear. Some sizes i have not been able to get , so if they are in the power supply I have either left them as is or changed them for a bigger size.I even managed to get an 8200uF,16V cap into my X-plora tuner !
The A1001 and 308 CD should be quite easy as the cases will allow bigger caps. Attack those in the power supply first. The caps in the power supply will be either 6800uF or maybe 10,000uF.Either way, change these for bigger versions from something in the RS cat.RS do have a good supply or these types. You will not be able to get these sizes in FM or even FC Panasonic.Given the age of the A1001,it is likely that some of the caps have dried out anyway and are due for a change.
I managed to do a lot of my MF gear ( X-Plora,X-Ray,X-AS100 and even my Nu-Vista).However I was stumped with the nu-vista as I could not find any 1000uF ,100V rated caps that would physically fit !

Hello thegreatroberto,
Certainly I would like to change the caps. There are four reservoir caps, but strangly there doesn't appear to all that much room unless they are the same size as the Jamicons. These four caps are 6800uf 100 V. There are two others but I don't know what they are unless I open the box up again.
I'd post a photo of the innards, but I don't know how to.

you need to park the pics at one of the free web photo hosting sites (your ISP may even have it) then link the pictures here by right clicking the picture, choose "properties",highlight then copy the web location (xxx.xxx.jpeg for example) then add the meta tags and it will show up here as long as the picture is at the address

The standard MF configuration of 4 (2 per cha) 6800,63V Jamicons.Simply replace with Panasonic 10,000 63V caps.Should fit. They are dia 35mm and 50mm tall.RS charge about £7 ea.....................................................Hold on, I've just read your thread again 100V.Those will be bigger !Trying to get 10,000uF 100V caps will be quite challange.....Just check that voltage again can you.And give us an approx size of the caps

I'll probably need one of those huge circuit breakers and watch the lights in the neighobourhood dim momentarily. The house lights already flicker for a half a second when I turn the amp on :-)

OK...I opened up the A1001 beastie and the main capacitors are:
4x6800uf 100V (35mm Dia x 62mm (ish)) 2x4700uf 25V 4x100uf 100V
Plus there's the usual white paste heat transfer compound.
In the 308CD the mains one appear to be: 2x15000uf 35V 1x15000 10V 2x2200uf 25V 1x4700uf 16V 2x1000uf 50V 1x1000uf 35V 1x470uf 16V 4x1000uf 16V
If anyone thinks they can help I would be interested.

Some unusual size caps there ! You may well strugle to get the 100V caps in a bigger size.....Obviously they exist, it's just whether RS/Farnell etc stock them. Same thing with the 308cd's.Those 2 15000uF jobbies must be a fair size.Again trying to find bigger/better ones will be a strugle.I'm not sure what is to be gained by adding bigger ones here.the PSU of these CD's is meant to be quite good.

Hello,
Many thanks for the link. I also managed to find the caps on Digikey as well; the Panasonic TS series. I presume that even these would be better then the Jamicons. Something to bear in mind for the future.
Unfortunately, for now, other priorities take precedence.
