With technobabble like that to back them up, and no doubt being made of the finest unobtanium, mined by giant leprechauns in the foothills of the Himalayas, I bet they're damned expensive too. They're rubber feet I just plop them on top to "dampen" the cap a bit... may sound daft but I believe it helps the overall SQ.

Ok, now we have an explanation for those Don't know how much they affect the sound, as have no any comparison. About the amp: Seems to take a bit time to warm up things (maybe valves). At half an hour on(just on, not headphones connected), complete lack of left channel. After about 5 minutes of sound (ie. music on, headphones connected...) Left channel appears to be little quieter than right and a bit crackling and harsh sound on left. An hour or so on, everything is fine and sounds absolutely fantastic. Did not notice this before than today, as I plugged headphones after this half an hour warm up. Every other day it has been warming up at least 2-4 hours before connecting headphones. Will be testing it further...

Mike,
Yes I love the sound of those valves. BUT...
I noticed this left channel problem AGAIN, yesterday. So, before that they worked fine and sounded absolutely fantastic.
Did test again this morning. 15 minutes warm up. Then plugged phones in, cd in -> left channel : crackling, no sound, sound, crackling, no sound, sound....
Opened up the case, swapped valves, 5 min. warm up. Sound is back again, no problems at all. Left it now on. Let's see what it sounds like after 10 hours on I'll be home from work.
So, I did send you that mail about reserving valves much before there was any problems with anything. I will surely buy another set of valves, but just trying to figure what the hell is this problem with the left channel...
Always after swapping/reseating valves the problem goes away.
Before the new valve bases, and now seems to be the same with fully modded can and new valve bases.

Maybe it just needs to be powered up like forever Nope...... sounds like there is an intermittent connection somewhere.... the fact that the problem disappears when you "press down" on the board suggests a poor connection somewhere..... send her over to me and I'll go over every joint with a magnifying glass. Mike.

Alistair, I've got a few amps here at the moment and only managed to put one hour on your V-CAN (sounds fantastic by the way) so, when you receive it back this week, give it an initial 3 or four hours (of music playing) before listening "critically".... it will improve further over the next 200 - 500 hours. Hope you like it! Mike.

No problems Mike. I am still getting my ears back after an ear infection so critical isn't on the cards for a few weeks. Really looking forwards to it. Cheers,
Alistair

Well I'm plumbed in and liking it even without the 3-4 hours. There is still a right first bias as you turn the volume up form zero, but there is more control so its very liveable with compared to the stock hair trigger volume control. The most noticeable thing so far is bass. Definitely more and tighter. Will report back as things improve. Cheers Mike

Quite funny.... the two large green caps (1000uF Nichicon MUSE) have been positioned in the two front slots..... The front panel PCB will foul them in this position You would have thought they would have taken the photo "after" finding this out

Actually Mike, displaying all these photos and showing people what you do does allow them to breach copyright. I know that you don't 'own' the mods but then they are being stolen after you've done the donkey work. That's not right.

Ian, If I was bothered I wouldn't display any photos and it would be a grey, boring place we all live in.... I'm not in this to "make money", I do it because I enjoy it and enjoy sharing.... the world is a big place, there's room for everybody. One thing's for certain, I certainly would not be sending my amp off to a guy on ebay who has one "blurred" stock photo and an even more fuzzy description of what he actually DOES to the amps

There is always a fool that will send it in, it would be great if such a person would educate themselves before parting with their money.
