Came accross these: www.ejjordan.co.uk/drivers/jxr6.htmlA speaker that goes from 80Hz to 30Khz, could be used for a single driver, full range speaker, but could also be combined with a big woofer for the trouser flapping stuff. In theory, a crossover way down around 100 - 120Hz would be much better than up around the more usual 3 - 4Khz, where the ear is more sensitive. Has anyone DIY'd some speakers? Was it a success, or a total disaster?

Quite a few over the years my most recent being the Wilmslow Audio "elegance" floorstanders. A breeze to construct if you've got really long G-Clamps, a good electric sander, craft knifes, soldering iron, screwdrivers, an iron (for the veneer) ie: simple to put together if you've got all the tools don't believe the crap that Wilmslow give you about the 10 year old putting a pair together with just a screwdriver. Sound quality? Nothing I've heard in the shops comes close, In fact a couple of years ago I took them to Robert Ritchie Hi-Fi in Montrose so I could audition a CD player with them and, even he, admitted that they trounced anything he had in the shop (B&W nautilus, Linn.... the works) Shaun Williams designed most of Wilmslow's speakers, then he left and started Williams Hart. I'm not sure who's designing their speakers these days but anything Shaun Williams related is sure to be a corker of a speaker. Here's the website: www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/And here's Shaun's website: www.williamshart.com/

In some ways I've always thought that the speakers can be the hardest part of a system to select. With my current system I made my mind up fairly quickly about the CD player and Amplifier, but I listened to about 8 pairs of speakers before choosing.
To some extent, the differences between amplifiers and CD players at a particular price point can be quite limited. Compared to electronics, speakers seem a lot more variable. They all seem to have a character very much their own and and the differences in their "voicing" can be quite considerable. Two sets of speakers may both sound pretty good, but their presentation might be quite different and the choice between them really comes down to personal preference.
I think I could well purchase a kit amp unheard, based on some favourable reviews, but I think I would need to hear a set of speakers before I splashed out. There's no doubt some of the kit speakers certainly look the part, my woodworking skills would probably be up to the task and the prices are very tempting when compared to the "ready made" stuff, but unheard; maybe just too much of a gamble.

Coward ! I love cheap full rangers for close up listening (computer) with 6 inchers being my fave. They handle the heart of music well though need assistance for the ultra highs and any true bass but for the 100hz to 12-16khz range just make music ! I get mine from old '70s beater stereos at the local rummage store with the amazing thing being some serious crap speakers had some very nice drivers such as the highly regarded Japan Pioneer and fostex full rangers.I just drop them into a small slot ported box,a box actually engineered with a REAL port if i can identify the driver then get the specs,or "wing" it and approximate the box size from what works with other like drivers and go with a large slot then cover the width with a temp piece of luan that I cover the width of the slot with a bit at a time and when I have it nailed measure the opening, cut new slot board then glue and screw it to the front panel from behind. Limitations ? None with a proper amp which means low power class-A,either triode or solid state, since they mostly SCREAM at 1-2 watts but hit them with too much power and you will get silemce because you just fried your voice coils Oh yeah, total build cost usually under $30 pr,build time 3-4 hours total
