Very cool DIY Mic projects way different from the typical "binaural only" type links I usually post.Armed with an MD deck and one of these "Candy Tin Micsets" you can get pretty good amatuer recordings of small scale instrumentals. www.mp3forkidz.com/mic/index.htmlBinaural is better for audience stealth recordings but will only sound right with headphone playback while the above are for speaker oriented playback

And finally the "original" Binaural Mic Set build article and page members.aol.com/MicDIYers/main.htmThere was at one time a "Yahoo Groups" MicDIYers group that was active but that was until the spammers found it and pretty much ruined the group. "Grow a larger penis so you can satisfy any woman" and "build a cheapr Mic Set for binaural recording" have very little in common for most of us and when the spam became the majority of posts the group folded even though it is still worth signing up for the files section where member builds are pictured (just click "no messages" in the profile at signup) well trying to find the above link for posting here I came across something very surprising (to me at least, probably the last human on planet earth to get this info and that is the "group" has reconstituted at a more traditional forum setting so here is the link www.freeforum101.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6&mforum=micdiyer&sid=311131ba7757a572d8271aa8efb00db5hopefully the word gets out and the activity is at the same level as the former email based message board.some great ideas were exchanged and if I have leaned one thing it is the more minds you have on a single topic the more angles and ideas will come out, things that maybe are obvious to one person are a baffling event to others and so the group is better than the individual participants when they are actively exchanging ideas in a civil manner finally the article most often referenced for DIY capsule mic builds webpages.charter.net/tidmarsh/binmic/cheap.simple,effective

The former "group" files section.Well worth the signing up if you are into amatuer recording using cheap DIY gear tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/MicDIYers/files/if you never heard TRUE binaural before it can be damn startling in its realism even on low end gear................

Hardest part of getting a good binauaral recording ? How and where the actual microphone capsules are mounted.Ideally you would use your own head with the capsules mounted on the frame of eye wear www.linkwitzlab.com/sys_test.htm#Mic....or better yet in a set of "throw aways" headphones like those that come with a portable player at a total cost of under $10 art.simon.tripod.com/stealth.htmlBTW-download the MP3 samples at trhe bottom of the page to get an idea of what to expect

Awesome stuff Rick I enjoyed those links. Have you ever come across Jim? binaural.jimtreats.com/ I know him very well and am sure we can organise some of his recordings to be sent over if you'd like to hear them? His fireworks night (full monty) recording is, literally, mind blowing. Mike.

Nice addy mikamundo ! One I have totally never come across and that makes it special binuaral recordings even at low quality and limited bandwidth are a blast to home brew.Even the most mundane action takes on a new level of "damn, that is too efin cool !" when played back later over cans with anything having surrounding noises (traffic, cocktail lounge, busy sidewalk, coffeee shop). I usually don't save any of these recordings but if pressed (and reminded ) next spring I will do the "peeper" mating calls.these are tiny little tree frogs that except for the spring you would never even know exist and they come out into the wetlands in droves all trilling their mating calls. When recorded in binaural sound from the center of the frog fest it is a big time cool to playback on cans yet not a little bit eerie too.Sends shivers down my spine dude ! Will do the field recordings then post them for download.Maybe get some kind of international Binaural Tree Frog Call swap going. then after that there is the midsummer Bull Frog deep "AruuuuM",wood frog cricket like chirps, toads trilling at dusk.Cool stuff Mikamundo

More ? You say you want more ? Ok then ;D For a real DIY microphone that is a bit higher in price to make and a bit higher on the build difficulty scale but still 100% do-able with a bit of care there is the "Alice".To me a worthy addition to any DIY recording kit arsenal : www.scotthelmke.com/alice-mic.htmlwww.scotthelmke.com/alice-construction.htmluses a 1" copper pipe as the microphone body for a very substantial mic that goes beyong the "toy" feel of the above capsule mics which also takes the gear bag requirements and microphone mounting up a notch so it comes down to fit the microphone to the job with this being more for use in a controlled situation and the above for fast and light impromtu recording other cool DIY mics here www.scotthelmke.com/microphones.htmlthere are plans for serious pro quality microphones that are fully capable studio performers but not being exactly portable due to they being more fragile (one a tube mic,the other a ribbon mic) so for another day
