Sitting here laying out my NEW diversion even though I still need to order the output transformers (going with James Transformers 10W SE @ $145/pair) and the power supply choke (again a James,5H,cheap ) but since the sizes are posted can still do the chassis work in advance.
The plan is to use up a stash of vintage tubes I have had sitting for months looking for project and finally I did the deed and did the "on paper" version (tweaks come after initial build ;D )
The lineup :
1-RCA 5Y3G Rectifier
2-Tung-Sol 6SL7GT dual triode
3-National Union 6F6GT/C output pair
4-Amperex (?) 7189 pair (a beefy EL34/6BQ5)
That lineup suggested a couple of ways to go here
1-A convertable 6F6/7189 SE amp
2-Either a 7189 SE amp or a 6F6 SE amp
3-6F6 SE amp with a 6SL7/7189 "MU Stage"
Opting for #2 but leaving room on the chassis for the possible MU Mod later.I also plan to add a Triode/Pentode selector and a Headphones/speakers selector and hoping especially for the "SE Trioded with headphones" at around .5-.7 watts to dethrone my Mongo Szekeres as my primary Grado Driver which from past experience with the 6V6 family it has a real shot at.
Only real problem as a headphone amp is what should come in as a fairly large amp -
Power Trafos : 3x2 3/4 footprint (old RCA pulled from a console )
Choke : just under 3 inches in diameter
Output trafos : 3 inch diameter (approx) per output
then there is the BIG MAMA HONKER rectifier to deal with
big but too damn "pretty"
two of these (same look, different brand)
and one of these
octal delight !
unless I toss in the MU Stage element which luckily is a wimp in size by comparison
the weird part is the markings on mine look nothing like the above and I have yet to see another 7189 that has the exact same logo and yes i have done searches.that the tube is authentic is not in doubt since it was pulled from a 1940's era RCA radio (tests good ) so a mystery.
anyway.......
power trafos center rear flanked by the output trafos, choke just in front of this with the dual section ps cap then the actual tubes in a diamond pattern with the rectifier at the top tip,the triode at the bottom and the two pentodes to the left and right side all on a 10x12x2 hammond steel chassis if I stay with the current plan. This amp should kick some ass within its power limitations and being simple wide open for future CCS/MU Stage/Etc experiemnts (G.Pimm PMCCS
I just need to figure a way to get some DAMN WOOD involded here other than goofy looking end caps
