I'm afraid I have to disagree with you there. What's wrong with the designers of valve equipment, can't they measure? They always use a box that's too small and leave half the innards sticking out.

I once made the BIG mistake of actually building a preamp with everything under the hood and I thought my wife was going to stab me with my sons Claymore "I CAN'T SEE THE DAMN TUBES GLOWING ! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU RICK ! YOU KNOW BETTER !"so never went down that road again.I like being married dude On a more serious note : High voltage parts are sizable and tubes run in class-a get hot so need a lot of interior space (and chassis venting) so the heat has a chance to dissapate and not overheat nearby passive parts, many of which are some form or another of plastic and we all know what plastic does when it gets hot (melts ) Then there is the hum issue and wiring for sonics rather than "looky how pretty" then toss in the iron, iron that at the minimum consists of a high voltage B+ transformer either with high current low voltage heater windings or those as separate transformers and either way again taking up space, toss in output transformers where size does actaully relate to bandwidth (a 20 watt output trafos has a wider bandwidth than a 10 watter for instance) and in many ( if not most ) cases a choke in the B+ supply and you have a lot of damn iron needing a place to be,big hot tubes.large resistors and capacitors (high voltages again),heavy wiring and a layout having special needs to avoid hum and it is either some on top/the rest below in a reasonably sized chassis or all inside a HUGE BOX that will get so warm you can't stack on top of it anyhow. Then there is the ease of layout where top mounted iron and tubes/bottom mounted passives and wiring make for a clean hum free design AND some just need to see the damn tubes glow so yeah, not ugly at all unless you like yours inside the box and solid state which only gets sexy with BIG HONKIN HEAT SINKS on what ? The outside of the box for venting

I'm sure a solution could be found where the warm bits get all the cooling necessary without having them stuck out, we seem to manage with cars. ...well, usually. Perhaps valve amp designers are frustrated hot rod builders. I really don't know much about tubes, are they sensitive to RFI? In which case wouldnt they be better in a vented metal enclosure?

I have no idea what you could possibly mean by that ;D no,just the opposite.they ARE sensitive to the power source and because there is both a low voltage AC or DC heater supply and a high voltage DC B+ supply a damn lot of AC flying around. This is made worse when you try to cramp everything int a small chassis and have your signal wires and signal tranformers butting heads with the inevitable result-HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Not me for one thing ! Never in my life made anything that good looking except for my children check out the host site for details www.basaudio.net/diyhosting/steve/index.htmlBTW-A 2A3 single ended amp makes for a killer headphone amp with the addition of 100-120 ohm inline resistors from the 8 ohm tap

I have to admit, I rather like that, but would you use a mineral oil, semi, or fully synthetic with it? Also, SWMBO is going to get annoyed when you spill some on the carpet when the time comes for an oil change.
