PS-2 Toslink to BNC Quick 'N dirty "El Cheapo" method Far better but a more expensive solution is to replace the above with the SPDIF output shown here : The actual part : Newava S22133

Those 99p a pop enclosures arrived today and I must say they are VERY good quality for "99p" (they must be end of line or something) Fitting them was pretty much a breeze but you do have to strip the entire PS1 out of it's existing enclosure (obviously) so if you can't use a screwdriver don't even bother spending 99p Both enclosures also required a slight degree of modding to the plunger that actuates the micro switch (the one that will only actuate the laser when it knows the door is shut)...... the plunger is a bit too short so it's necessary to superglue a couple of millimetres of "whatever" onto the end of it. I didn't bother doing any of the "dogbreath" mods when I was busy with the screwdriver, I'll get round to them some other time, but let me tell you that making and breaking a few connections has certainly made these things sound a lot better..... still not $6,000 beaters but a lot better than they sounded before I wiggled the connectors a few times. Fitted some "fatter" feet which allows air to circulate and even fitted a blue LED to the clear case "woooohooo!" about 30 minutes work so far and a couple of quid on two enclosures (the pics really don't do them any justice) they certainly look a bit more audio like now and less "9 year old playing with a toy" type of thing. Interesting to note that one of the PSU's had "Nichicon" printed on it and was populated with high quality Nichicon caps...... the other board was populated with Panasonic FA (NHG) series. I just WISH I could get worked up and enthusiastic with all this stuff (like I used to be) but I can't! I just want to go out and ride my bike, make love to women, smoke, and listen to good music.... it's true what they say guys..... you can have too much of a good thing.... amps, headphones, components blah blah blah just don't make me tent nowadays cause I'm fekkin buried in a mountain of them..... if the "playstation" was the only thing I had in the world it would probably be magical to me...... as it is I have way too much on my plate to concentrate all my attention one...... I've managed to get this far with the cosmetics..... total cost £2 (£1 each) hopefully I'll find time (and the inclination) in between building the Jaycar, the millet, the pinkies, the Pink Head, modding my E-bike, tree sculptures, bedding women, consuming vast quantities of alcohol, smoking myself to death etc. etc. to do a bit more to these buggers. Most definitely (in STOCK guise) a VERY good source for pennies..... no doubt about that, at all.

I was going to ask "yeah Mike, all good dude even though the chartruese makes me a bit queasy but how does it SOUND man ?" 'til some resemblance of sanity returned to my migrain inflicted cranium and I realized with all the costume changes the damn thing hasn't been plugged in long enough for that question to have any validity ;D

" things" there are two of the bastards and I think they've been WELL and TRULY burnt in...... I think one of the owners ate his breakfast at the machine by the looks of the internals (sounded a lot better once the egg yolk had been cleaned from the lens) yeh, yeh, I'll leave the green and clear on for 700 days and report back once the electrons have established a clear path to travel along..........

I was going to ask "yeah Mike, all good dude even though the chartruese makes me a bit queasy but how does it SOUND man? It's been on a good 24 hours now and sounds absolutely FANTASTIC Rick and that's via the RCA outputs! If it gets better than this through the AV outputs and with DB mods I'll be creaming my pants! Seriously mate, I thought you were pulling my plonker at first but after rehousing the green one (breaking and making the connections, cleaning the lens with a "huff" and cotton wool bud, cleaning the Phono sockets "and" leaving her powered up overnight) WOW!!!! I have to admit it not only gives my CD17, CD-52 MKll and Denon DCD-835 a run for their money.... it comes close to being my reference player from now on in....... I'm not shitting you here either! It may not be microscopic in it's ability to retrieve minutae detail from the disc but by god it MAKES MUSIC (and then some) when your toes are tapping and you rip the cord clean off your headphones when you stand up to air guitar or moonwalk across the room you know you've found a good 'un! I cannot believe JUST how good this one is (the green)...... I'm still pissed off having to use a joystick type gadget to flip between tracks but I'm sure there's a remote out there that will actually work with the SCHP-1002....... It's very easy to discount something that's old or not intended for a specific purpose but please allow me to be man enough to admit I was WRONG..... the SCHP-1002 (or 1001 if you're stateside) is one hell of a music maker. Awesome! and we haven't even gone down the dogbreath road yet. Cheers Ricksteroonierecticusmonsterooni

So whats the easiest way to get a decent sounding player for the least amount of soldering and $$$? Just using the AV Multi out?
Thanks, Brendan

So whats the easiest way to get a decent sounding player for the least amount of soldering and $$$? Just using the AV Multi out? Thanks, Brendan Well....... I've just made up an AV to phono connector and it is as close to free as you can get. There was this PAL convertor thing that came with the playstation so I chopped the multipin connector off the end of it and cut it down with a craft knife until I came to this: I took all the pins out of the connector and gave them a good clean (not that they needed it) and then reinserted them. All that concerns you here are the first 4 pins with pin 1 being left ground, pin 2 being left signal, pin 3 being right ground and pin 4 being right signal. Solder your interconnect onto the corresponding pads on the slot in multipin connector PCB and bob's your uncle..... you've now got yourself a nice multi to phono interconnect Run a bead of epoxy over the joints, heatshrink and voila! go plug her in and enjoy the music! 20 minutes work in all. Cable in service..... the black thing is a snap on ferrite ring by the way: Thanks to Mick Feuerbacher for the idea

Thats sweet looking, and great sound to boot. Great jump. Since your an electronics guru and a man of many means, this is just me thinking, so if it's way out there just ignore it . But I wonder if you have a scope, I wonder if you could get one of those 1 fits all remotes where you just program them, Find out what frequency the play station runs and and program the remote for that? Nm, if it doesn't have a receiver for the infrared or RF.....

AFAIK there "is" a remote that can be used with the PS1 it's just a matter of finding the correct one ;D

Mike I asked a couple of "gamers" I know if a remote was ever made for this unit and sadly I was told NO! Sorry. Not true.Just about every gaming platform ever made had as its second "add-on" the IR "control extender" (game savers were the first offered accessory-memory cards) and I even have one hanging off the control ports of an old SEGA that is also in the "video game graveyard" box where I found the PS-1.The expensive ones were always by the gaming platform manufacturer then the cheaper aftermarket versions would come out so there are many versions with the trick being to FIND them this long after the platform has been offered for sale. i think one of the gaming zones or game hack sites may be the best bet for finding one I have one here somewhere and from memory is the dual port/dual controller version (my sons had everything for every machine ever invented all the way back to the Atari ) but so far it has been elusive.Hiding from me is what i think......

Over the weekend I found 3 cables suitable for the AV out on the Playstation and one that I will be using parts from to make up a better cable.
Last night I managed to give the SCPH-5502 a try for about half an hour. The results were surprising. At first I thought the 5502 sounded terrible which is only to be expected. After about 20 minutes things had improved a little but the sound was still thick, with poorly defined bass, and truncated highs.
The most surprising thing though was that despite this the detail seemed to be superior to the 1002. Playing a dub track on the 5502 there were some vocals that had been taken way down in the mix which I had not noticed before. When I tried the same track on the 1002 I did hear the vocals but they were not as clear or as intelligeble as before, the 5502 seemed to get deeper into the mix.
This is not really a fair comparison at the moment, firstly the 5502 has not been used for a few years and the 1002 was using the phono outputs so some of the difference in detail might be down to the output.
I have left the 5502 on and will be checking again over the next few days but I really need to get the my Darkvoice packed up and sent to Mike for some mods so I probably won't be able to do a full comparison yet.
There does seem to be some potential for the 5502 and other models to be a reasonable CD player, although I don't remember the 1002 sounding as bad when I first tried it as the 5502 did initially.

Remember Rossman....... clean the laser "huff and puff" and wipe with a cotton wool bud, do the dogbreath mods and listen from the AV out...... 1002 is quite nice then

I hope to do a better comparison between the two players on my return and will have identical av out cables for comparison as well. I will also try and post observations over the next couple of days to see if the gap is closing between them. The Dogbreath mods might come later once I am more confident weilding a soldering iron.

BTW it is model SCPH-7001 circa 1997. As much use a making a cup of tea without the teabag....... you're looking for 1001 and us tea drinking Brits are looking for 1002.... a 7001 is as useless as instant coffee.....from what I've read..... try and get yourself some real 1001 tea old chap ;D

A fellow co-worker loaned me a Playstation he purchase about 10 years ago. He is not using and I will be able to check it out starting this weekend. BTW it is model SCPH-7001 circa 1997. I would tend to disagree with Mike's comments. It seems to be hearsay. My theory is that the1002s audiophile cred is based on it having phono sockets. My investigation of the 5502 shows using the same AV out cable on both players the sound is very close even though the 5502 has only been on for a couple of days and is still improving. At the very least this would make a good source for a first system and I think it would beat most things up to £200. It has the potential to be as good as the 1002 once it is fully warmed up. Put together with a higher quality T-amp and a pair of effecient speakers it would walk all over an Ipod system that most mags seem to be reviewing at the moment.
