Thanx dc - the first 3 points I had - someone thought it better than the SB3 onboard DAC. Will be interested to hear what you think of it and what you compare to. I have a couple of Monica2 here, one USB one not, one with I/V gain stage, other not (yet, have kit but 2 slack)

I've not heard one but heres a piccy of the guts, notice the name of the I/C's have been rubbed off. BTW the parts are CS8412/4 receiver and PCM1716 dac ;D It won't be the best sounding thing out there but as noted it is cheap, if you decide to buy one of these my advice is to scrap that cheap nasty plug in external supply and fit something nicer The headphone amp would be a total waste of time IMHO

Thanks for your input Leo, it is valued and respected, but let's not do a lawntroll on it and see what dc thinks when he tries it.

Well its very rare for me to judge anything without listening to it but I do know the PCM1716 very well and theres only a few ways to implement this one I'm afraid, you see with these dac chips they have all the important bits inside the actual chip including its quite poor internal I/V section so no matter how much you try and tart it up..... Anyway point taken so I'll keep me trap shut ;D

Leo, I think there is a world of difference between your reasoned and reasonable professional opinion of the capabilities and limitations of the particular components based on your own experience of them in various applications and those of the incident in question. There is also a marked difference in tone and apparent motive. Yours being much more easily seen as commentary in response to enquiry, rather than attack from "out of nowhere", your background and experience are known, not googled. Your general attitude is very easily found from your other posts and there is NO similarity. I merely meant that, in light of recent events, a quick and unfriendly view might draw an unwarranted conclusion from the one similarity.
edit - I asked for info on this and have found your input most valuable, exactly what I was looking for - thank you

Well at least if DC can get one for review first he can post his impressions, I'm sure the Beresford will be ok maybe considered by some as decent, I just wanted to say don't expect miracles from it If I was forced to have one of these I'd certainly modify it, if anybody does get one of these and is confident soldering SMD parts and fancies a go just say so and I'll advise a few things to try, BTW the PCM1716 can be removed and replaced with a better dac chip that is pin compatible

well i was under the impression it would be a free trial or i just pay shipping both ways but that is not the case
if anyone would like to "beta test" it for 60GBP then let me know. but for now i don't really have the time for another piece of equipment around here.
it's funny why i got contacted, because i don't hate the DAC but just can't stand one of its vocal supporters on h43d-f1 and openly point out his stupidity, as a result the maker stanley beresford wants to convert me to team beresford

I guess it was as much curiosity, having not heard of the unit before. While $AUD100 off is some incentive - like dc, I seem to have too many other things on the go for any more gear to try out. Having just been reading a thread elsewhere where a chap was trying a Stello 220 DAC against his Arcam Alpha 5 plus onboard DAC and not hearing any difference, it is hard to imagine it providing any improvement on what I already have. My main use for a DAC is for computer output rather than CD transport or possibly for an SB3 if I get one. I have not yet done a serious comparison of any of the DACs I already have (they are not even fully burned in I think) against the analogue out of 2 different, good quality 24/96 soundcards, Terratec & M-audio firewire. I think I should do that first, so I might have to pass on this one. Anyone with experience of this DAC is welcome to add their impressions.

there's a USB version on its way early next year. if it's price remains the same that could be an attractive solution for PC use
hehe, aside from changing jobs and issues with my personal life, i recently took delivery of 3 new amps and a pair of headphones and another amp possibly on the way, oh and a new USB sound card
haven't even had a chance to test the sound card yet!

Tony I would be very interested to see any comments from you about analogue out from the Terratec into Voyager or Solo. I am using the Creative X-Fi Extreme Music's analogue out , but I understand that the Terratec is a 1st rate soundcard. Regards Alex

minivan I don't know anything about the Onkyo card. Was it featured in a review in one of the Aust.PC magazines recently ? I seem to remember reading something about it, and if it was the one, it got a pretty decent writeup. I am not sure which settings you are referring to with the X-FI card. I haven't played with it much recently. At one stage I used it a few times to liven up old recordings. I did however replace the generic L and R I.C. with an OPA2134, with quite an improvement in SQ. minivan The Onkyo card was the one I read about in the PC magazine. I already checked a few sites to confirm that. I noticed that Audiocubes is out of stock, and their asking price is US$199 + delivery. Regarding, the X-FI soundcard, I may have been able to do the job, but these hands are a little shaky these days, so I got a friend to do it for me, to be on the safe side. Another reason I didn't do it myself, was that the SM OPA2134 and LM4562 are slightly smaller than the original, and quite fiddly to get in the correct position. BTW, I didn't worry about the rest of the mods, as I read elsewhere that some people had trouble after the capacitor replacement. Alex www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=229350

We also have a TC 7500 in Germany for about 80 Euronen, the 7510 costs twice as much. There is also an article about modifying the cheaper one on a german Hi Fi forum.
