I was thinking of getting a monica 2 with gainstage board, the DAC wants 12VDC and gain stage would prefer 18V.
Are the off the shelf 12V regulated supplies good enough to not bother DIYing? Are the £5 ones much different from the £20 ones? A truck battery is not an option.
If DIYing is worth it, what circuit should go between the transformer and DAC/Gainstage? I could solder it together but not design it. I assume a DIYed one would have 2 transformers, are cheaper and compact ones as good as larger toriodals?

Hi, I have had a Monica 2 for some time and just run it with a regulated wall wart - seems OK but perhaps would be better with a fancy supply. I recently got the board for the I/V gain stage to add it in to the box and was intending to run it from the 12v supply already in place - that is how Yeo seems to have set it up on the description page. Granted, at the top of the page he does mention that there have been reports that it runs better off 18v - with the trimpots in the circuit I would imagine you could try both. If you are going to roll your own PSU maybe you can find a transformer with suitable taps for both and fit your own regulators. I will leave all that stuff for someone who actually knows something Have fun
