Recently, on another forum, a poster using a Blue Point cartridge with an MF XLP phono stage was seeking recommendations for an upgrade. This cart is a high output MC specified as 2.5mv and recommended for 47K Ohm load (manufacturer spec). During the course of the discussion both he and another poster who had used this cart stated that it sounded better through the MC input (phono stage of second poster not stated). I also read on yet another forum, a user of a Denon HOMC who stated that it sounded better via the MC input of his Rotel pre. I find these comments puzzling since my limited (< 0) knowledge suggests that the output from these cartridges is way too high for an MC stage and that the overall gain would be too great. Were it only the one post, I would put it down to some quirk of equipment matching/mismatching, but with 2 different cartridges and presumably 3 different phono stages involved it appears a reproducible phenomenon. Perhaps some one or another of the audiotronics boffins here could shed some light for me.

Hi, I don't know the exact answers; I do know also a HOMC has a coil, which reacts specifically and brutally on loadresistance (coilmovementdemping). But I take you already knew this, so I'll give you the vinylengine.com site where you can find a very interesting article about MC loading vs soundresults, maybe that helps some. Good luck Han

Graham, the matter arose when the OP was looking for an upgrade to the MF and I suggested the Era Gold since I was very happy with the sound from my then Denon DL110 HOMC via the Era Gold. His Blue Point has higher specified output than the Denon and I therefore assumed would be a good match with the EG. He was happy with the suggestion until some "expert" whose speaker cables cost more than my entire vinyl frontend, posted that "when he used to have a Blue Point (before he abandoned that for a DL304 and then abandoned all vinyl for SACD) that "it sounded better through the MC input of his then integrated amp." Said integrated was not specified. I have read some less than complimentary remarks on the Blue Points, so perhaps, as you say, they prefer the distortion. In fairness, I have also read less than complimentary remarks on my preferred Denons.
