I have a XC-Van v2 which shows the brown scorch marks on the PCB. I intend to drill the pcb to increase ventilation as detailed by Mike, my question is it better to not power up the X-Can when not in use or will that shorten/adversly affect the valves in particular and or capacitors>

"Always on" will dramatically shorten the in spec lifespan of the valves. The in spec lifespan is 5,000 hours (208 days) and after that the valves start to drift out of spec so keeping it turned on permanently is just speeding up the demise of the valves. Actually, the only reason I think MF recommended that it be left on all the time was so they got the service work when the amp packed in! The capacitors and the valves will both have a shorter in spec lifespan if left powered up 24/7/365. When was the last time you changed your valves Major? All the best, Mike.

Thanks Mike, I've only recently got it going again after a few years (no op). I repaced all of the PSU caps, I suspected one had gone so I changed them all. I can't say how old the valves are, I can't remember since it was a few years ao I stopped using it. It sounds great but the treble is a little harsh on some recordings, strangely music from both my streamer (Auralic Mini) and my CD (Naim CD5) sound really good but not as good from ny son's Project Essential 3 turntable. The turntable through the amp sounds great just wondering if the X-Can is more reavealing? Another complication I've had the Naim Pre 62 and Power 140 recapped a few years ago. I'll probably changed the valves for starters.recapped a few years ago after I last previously used the X-Can. I'll probably change the valves for starters. Thanks Vince

Fit a fresh pair of matched valves and you'll be in audio heaven...... for sure.
Mike.
