We gave our youngest a set of audioequipment for his birthday today. I compiled a set of some nice old Marantz amp (350) and tuner (450) and a fixed sony cd player I had from another project. Together with Accoustic Energy Aegis one speakers make a decent set I think. He was very delighted with his present. He's 8 years old... I would be over the moon at that age. My kids are a bit more spoiled than me as a kid.

Wow, very cool. My daughter got a cd/mp3/radio player when she turned 6. To be honest it sounds horrible and the money indeed would have been better spent on some separates like these. Then again, not sure she would really appreciate it, not having the same obsession with buttons and dials that I had at that age

I would NOT (!!) spend much on audio for a 6 year old. Possible that a cd is replaced with a peanut butter sandwich.
I can steer my kids with some musical education this way. We bought secondhand cd’s from old and new artist. My kids know music of rolling stones, beatles, micheal jackson and some other artists.

The marantz amp & tuner are perfect. Switches that work, buttons that have bite and that rotary dial . . . Perfect education about quality, history and music. Let them loose on Radio 4 just so long as its not too much Womans Hour !!!

I would like to teach my kids a bit here and there. Some can teach to repair a car, some about music.
Radio 4 is classical music in the Netherlands.
