Hi Mike ,
Well it did rain ........... all day
Interesting and informative read on that site. In some ways I feel he is harping back to the old days of "if it measures well, it will sound good". I can agree with the blind tests theory but what is forgotten is that hearing is as much psychological as physical so if it sounds good to you then it is good.. Quote from my audiologist! I leave the thought of valve amps to one side here
Or maybe that is a naive reading of his thoughts.
Secondly in the tests he says he has exclude some amp because they were "way too good" I would love to know which they were.
Finally his assertion that all the recordings have been processed thro many 55xx chips will only effect the track as laid down (and there are many poor quality recordings/mixes) not as it is reproduced. Yes you can only retrieve what is there but you can retrieve it in a better or worse way Again maybe I have miss read the article.
As a result of the info I will try a some cheaper chips and save a few pounds. He has given me some pointers to look out for when rolling the chips and it was definitely worth a visit
Thank you Mike
All the best Martin

Hi
So after looking around I found some recommendations on diyaudio for the Byerdynamic A1clone (which seems pretty much the same but only one phone socket) and have gone with a pair of LT1057s from RS
The muses 8820 is also a good try I'm told but twice the price and only from Mouser with steep postage, at least RS is free postage
Any one any thoughts? Will they working?
I'll let you know what happens when they are plugged in
All the best Martin

Hi,
So the chips have arrived this morning (I love the free RS next day delivery) Plugged both in and first impressions after 5mins running bit more open, more mid range, loss of base
Not taken any measurements not sure how to and no facilities to do so anyway
See how they go after a few hours listening
All the best
Martin

Hi
Tried both op amps now both the LT1057 and the Muses 8820 are a big improvement and I'd recommend both.
Very little to choose between them maybe the 8820 has it with the DT 880 phones and the Sennnys better with the 1057 but that's a very fine line. However the 8820/DT 880 is my favourite of the two Both open out sound stage impressively bass is tight and controlled but plenty of it, midrange is tamed but full of presence and detail and the treble loses its tinkled tinny sound but the detail is increased.
Noticed that they both are very unforgiving with poor recordings especially the 1057/DT 880 combination, found that the 1057/Senny was much better with poor recordings. Not tried the Grado 80s or the 125es yet
BUT and there's always a but Just noticed these op amps and wondered if anyone has any experience of them metal canned LME49713?
