Maintaining the theme of everything Chinese, I've bought a YAQIN Tube Buffer to see if it was any good. First impressions - very good. Detailed, open, with all the warmth and fluidity of valves.  Then, I whipped out the stock SHUGUANG 6J1s and replaced them with MULLARD EF95s. Good move: the sound improved considerably. More expansive and open, with a larger soundstage.  It's still burning in, so I'll leave off giving any definitive comments to a later date. By the way, I bought it on E-Bay for £12.50 (plus delivery). Here's some pics.    |

I'm steering WELL clear of the direct from China gear from now on.
I've just had a long drawn out episode of shipping 10 kilos of scrap metal back across to the great wall for a refund.
Cost me a small fortune in return shipping and the sudden inability of the seller to understand English is really pissing me off.
He was perfectly f**kin' versed in the English language when he took my money.
These apparant great deals are fine and splendid when everything goes to plan but when / if they go into meltdown you're faced with a huge shipping bill back to some spurious base, little or no "customer service" and if you do manage to find someone who can speak English you can be sure they'll repeat and repeat and repeat that return shipping and shipping back to you will be at "your" expense, not theirs.
You'll find yourself well and truly up shit creek without a paddle and it could turn out to be a very unpleasant ride down the rapids.
I'm almost ready to throttle this bloody "ampro" dealer. He's got 5 hours left to start understanding English again, if he doesn't then I'll wipe the floor with his outfit.

Christ, you've had a f**king nightmare with this!!!! And then pulling the old I don't understand English ploy - insufferable!!!!
It's a cautionary lession to anyone thinking about buying anything from China, but especially something as fragile and sensitive as audio equipment. I haven't got my fingers burnt yet (touch wood), but having said that I'm probably tempting fate.
Perhaps some kind of thread is in order to warn those comtemplating buying from China - unreliable sellers, the many pitfalls etc.
