Hi
Two years back went to my local HiFi shop Audio Counsel in Oldham and had the pleasure to listen to the Audion sterling valve amp since then i have wanted one but have never had the funds (something always crops up to empty the piggy bank), so while i save i thought about a tube buffer and the musical fidelity's x10d looked a good bet and i liked the idea of modding one but rather than purchase the genuine article for me to practice on i bought one of the clones off ebay.
On its arrival i couldn't wait to try it and on wiring it up i was very disappointed, the distortion was bad not just a bit bad but very bad (crackling you couldnt hear music) so i left it hoping the valves would break in then after many hours and no change i purchased some Mullard and Philips valves but these made no difference so after experimenting with different source equipment i found that i could stop the distortion if i used my ibasso dap or phone via the headphone socket and turned the volume right down unfortunately my amp needs to be up full to hear it, so i came to the conclusion that the output volume from my cd player (and anything else with line out connection) is to high for the x10d clone.
in a bid to get it working i decided to replace some of the parts a bit at a time rather than purchase a full upgrade kit for it still not to work. So far i have replace the 6 low-value capacitors with 4 WIMA MKP10 and 2 ELECTEL MKT72 but sadly it made no change to the distortion, i also have some Panassonic power caps but have not swapped them yet, has anyone any ideas why it cant take the input single
