it looks pretty cool and is supposed to sound good. what is the difference between a flash player and a regular mp3 player? how many songs could a 512mb to 1g player hold while still retaining good quality sound?

A mp3 player can store the mp3 files in flash memory - that'll make it a 'flash player' or on a harddisk which should make it a 'hard disk player' although I'm not sure whether this is a actually used expression.
For the rest I have no clue due to the lack of experience.

I wouldn't buy it, if only for Creative removing the fm recording support some time after market introduction. In addition, I really wondered why the smaller Muvo N series (in the meantime renamed to Zen Nano Plus) would sport a line-in, while the slightly larger V series doesn't...
As for music storage capacity, you just need to multiply the memory capacity by 8 to turn the MBytes into Mbits and then divide that by the bitrate your mp3s are encoded in - e.g. 1GByte => 8 Gbit => by 192 kbps (cbr) => 43690 s => ~ 12 h

Yup - provided one's encoding in constant bitrate (cbr), it's rather simple.
