I've always kept a LOAD of parts in stock and have, only now, had to reorder certain bits and bobs that I am on the verge of running out of. Shock and horror when I was faced with an almost 300% price increase compared to what I used to pay!! How much??!! Jesus H, I really have been living in the Boondocks for too long..... no wonder everybody says my kits are "superb value for money" It's my own fault for being forward thinking at the time (buying in bulk) and not keeping up with current prices from thereon inwards. The upgrade kits that I sell (as niche as they are) will have to (at least) increase in price by 60% to remain viable....... I have just realised that I have been (compared with today's component prices) giving them away for peanuts. No wonder there are so many happy X-CAN owners

Thing is Alex, I am buying in quantity but I am buying quality capacitors....... I could probably get a shed load of those "Ying Hao" strange name capacitors for pennies but I wouldn't take a thousand in a gift. I am really passionate about quality and it seems strange that the influx of cheap and nasty capacitors has driven UP the cost of the good quality / well established cap manufacturers. Possibly for the best...... the last thing the likes of ELNA / Nichicon / Panasonic etc. wants to do is to drive down quality to "compete" with these pirates / cloners....... I can appreciate where they are coming from. Mike.

I don't use crappy electrolytic capacitors either, especially after getting burned by using Suntan capacitors from Jaycar, which performed well, but often developed domed tops due to the use of a pirated electrolyte formula that destroyed so many PC motherboards. I do use Nichicon, Elna, Panasonic etc. but I get them via ebay. They may have been manufactured several years earlier than those from the major distributors, but perform flawlessly. Quality brands appear to have a good shelf life.

Jesus H, I really have been living in the Boondocks for too long..... no wonder everybody says my kits are "superb value for money" I recently went over a couple of the projects that we've done on here and repriced the BOM. A real shocker, in not that much time the costs have spiraled! This must be a contributary reason to less widespread DIYing going on, it's in danger of becoming the hobby of a wealthier section of the population rather being your Joe Bloggs route into decent kit.

Just the resistors & caps for my AKHA came to $90.00. I buy from mouser here in the states. I use Xicon 1/4watt 1% metal film resistors; they cost $0.15ea. in small quantities. If buy a given value as a bag of 200 pieces, the cost goes down to $0.025ea. The secret is buying in quantity if it is feasible. Capacitors are more costly.
Mouser does not have a minimum order; they make it easier to do business with.
I have mentioned in another post a while ago that the electronic press that used to cater to DIY has all but disappeared here & the younger set can't be bothered building it themselves. Sad state of affairs. Bill Wilson

Another case: The battery in our cordless phone dipped out so I set off to find a new one. On line I'd looked it up for €9.95, I found it in a store for €18. So did I buy it? NO! I bought a brand new, better featured cordeless phone for €19 Madness!

Chris There is far more profit in selling replacement parts. Look at car spare parts and printer ink cartridges as an example.

So much for all the "green" cobblers they keep shoving down our throats. Don't fix it, lob it in the land fill.

I ordered a bunchload of capacitors from Mouser in the USA and even with duty they worked out half the price the robbing buggers over here charge! Gotta buy in quantity though to get the best individual unit price..... ie: buy ONE and it will cost you £1.60..... buy ONE THOUSAND and you are talking 27 pence each Quite a difference!
