Well, after about a 5-6 year break in serious headphone usage due to small kids and not living at my Mum's anymore I've finally dusted off my old kit (Cyrus CD8X player, Sennheiser HD600 'phones and a Graham Slee green Solo amp purchased through this forum about 7-8 years ago!), brought it round to my new place and set it up, shoved in a disc and it's good to be back! The HD's needed a new cable which I've just fitted and I'm hearing a quality of sound I've been missing for a few years! In recent times my listening has mainly been confined to the car stereo whilst commuting, and it's marked just how much of the musical message gets lost.
Glad to be listening through the HD's again! I've also got a set of Grado GS1000's I may consider flogging at some point.

As the kids get a bit older, you will probably need to use headphones more and more. Partly to drown out the crap they often listen to, and also to avoid pissing them off too much with your ancient, uncompressed REAL sounding music.

Good to have you back. Listen to the Grados first. You may now like them as your top end hearing fades with age !!!

In my case, even though my HF is WAY down due to hearing damage with Telstra and being almost 77, headphones that sounded too aggressive, and speakers too, still annoy me. They accentuate annoying sibilance in voices.

This is annoying with perfect hearing!

HD600 cables always get microcorrosion at the connectors - I pull them out and wipe them off, blow any loose stuff out of the sockets, plug them back in - never has failed me. They're good for a few months to a year that way.

Almost everything on Youtube or VEVO annoys me with it's maximum 187Kilobits/s .aac encoding, and you only get that high a bit rate with 1280 Video.

I downloaded Adele's song because one of my fishing buddies was thrilled with it. Very difficult to listen to. Extremely compressed.

I find some stuff is just poorly produced - quality though doesn't matter up to 320bps so the ipod brigade don't notice and they get away with it.
It's funny how so much good music can be 'found' by following decent producers and engineers.
I am assuming (Mike) that you are talking about the quality of the production and not Adele and her video - why the f#-k have they allowed the conversation to bleed into the music at various points (e.g. 2m.50s).

Aside from the compression thing I must admit to really disliking this particular song. As soon I hear that first faltering "hello" I'm cringing, just a personal thing but I always switch it off.
Maybe to spoil the illegal download for the mp3 generation ? Or is it like that on the CD too...

Remember how we went from physical media to digital files? We're going to return to a form of physical media in the next few years, but it won't be CD's etc. Thanks to the RIAA and their jackbooted enforcers, we will have to insert the approved feedback anal probe before we're allowed to hear the compressed music we'll be buying, and furthermore, we will have to sit through 30-second ads for floor-cleaning supplies at random intervals while listening.

Ahhhh, Dale, you've been looking in the same crystal ball as me, not a pretty vision is it. All our preferences will be stored and updated on a bio-chip, then uploaded every time we connect to the web, wirelessly, no need for a USB7.0 cable in your navel. The ads will be delivered subliminally so we will literally buy what we're told to.

I agree with you Chris, I absolutely detest Adele's style of singing. Somebody on the radio a while back was saying that she is the best female singer ever...... what??!
The moment I hear her on the radio "screeching away" I hit the off button. She seems to be very popular but I suppose she's like marmite, you either love it or loathe it.
Mike.

Ha!
Going back to the replacement HD600 cable I fear it was not corrosion on the connectors to blame but actual breakage of the cores caused by me standing on the cable (unintentionally of course) whilst stood up and taking a step, causing that infuriating headphones nearly getting ripped off of head scenario. I've buggered several cables up that way.
As for audio compression, not quite the same but I was recently listening to a 'remastered' copy of U2's Joshua Tree album (you may ridicule but I make no apologies) and I have to say, I thought the sound/ production was very enclosed and actually, not very good- there seemed to be very limited separation. I'd be interested to know how it compares to the original version!

Screeching cow! whatever happened to real female singers? When I was a wee lad, I lusted after this (then) 36 year old woman, certain of myself that I could please her and be her teddy bear, or, umm, whatever. She was from a time when music was wholesome, and even the rebellious music made a contribution to the culture. And, I doubt Adele will ever have a tenth the resume Ms. Clark has, 20/30/40 years from now.

To THIS day I get an erection every time I watch this....... And what pray tell would you do with this lady if you had the opportunity then? I imagine many things - from Tom Conti's "hot dirty weekend" to Ian Hunter's musings from Mott The Hoople.
