I asked this a while back and Mike reckons they don't make much difference, or not enough to justify the price.
You can DIY, but you can't buy the headphone connectors separately so you need cut the connectors off an existing cable and attach the replacement cable to them, which isn't ideal.
If your existing cable is faulty, then you could replace it with a "better", more expensive after market one, or use the connectors from the faulty cable to make a new one, but if there's nothing wrong with your existing cable, I'd stick with it.

I did? I've only really spent time with the Cardas cable and honestly couldn't say it was £150 (or whatever it costs) worth of improvement to justify buying. It wasn't necessarily an "improvement" as such, more of a subtle difference compared with the stock cable. Not night and day "wowee" not to my ears anyways. Some people absolutely swear by aftermarket cables for the Senns and I don't doubt there are improvements to be had. DIYing your own is relatively simple but it's almost impossible to source the connecters that fit into the capsules on the headphones. You can "splice" your existing connectors and fit them onto a cable of your choice (Belden seems a popular choice of cable) Have a look at this thread it's got a few bits and bobs on cable in it www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=72860
